Begginer trying to make 2D to 3D moveie clip.

I have watched some Youtube videos on making a 2D still picture into a 3D animation.

I have a picture that I cut out 2 images from and filled in the background, but I can't get the images to stand out in 3D.

Does Adobe or anyone else have a step by step lesson that would help me do this?

I an using After Effects CS6 Trial, and the picture I used was seperated into 3 layers and saved using Photoshop CS4.
