Cannot Scroll Through Fonts?

Hi all

 

I have Illustrator CS5 and I am having problems with my fonts.  I like to type my text, highlight it, and then click on the font I am using and scroll down so I can see the text I've type changed until I find the font I want.

 

However, I am having some issues - it only seems to go through fonts in sections.  I have a lot of fonts on my computer but I cant scroll through more than about 10/15 without it either jumping to the end/bottom font or going back to the font I started on.

 

Its very odd.

 

Any ideas?

    This is a nifty little workaround I discovered recently for this problem. Go to your Type Preferences and uncheck "Enable Missing Glyph Protection". It worked for me, althought I'm not completely sure what the glyph protection does in the first place.

    Hi

     

    What an oddity.  Good work around although I worry if there is any other effect for turning that off?  It worked though.  I quickly googled it and font this explaination for the check box (albeit talking about it from a photoshop perspective):

     

    Enable Missing Glyph Protection
    If you enter non-Roman text (e.g., Japanese or special decorative characters) after selecting a Roman font, Photoshop will automatically substitute an appropriate font to prevent unreadable characters from appearing.

    This would make some kind of sense as I have some oddly named fonts on my system which looks like they may be the issue.  Has anyone else got any insight?

    From this resource, it seems like you'll only have a problem you'd encounter by switching this off is if you need to type in special text - like you mentioned above.

    What do you mean by "a lot" of fonts? Do you use a font amnagement utility such as Suitcase?

    Hi Russell

     

    I was not aware of "Suitcase" or similar utilities.  I have just have a round up of my fonts folder and there is a total of 2935 fonts (thats literally all variations of bold etc in the windows/fonts folder).

    Simon,

     

    Does selecting the text, and then scrolling your mouse wheel as you hover the mouse pointer on the Fonts drop-down help at all?
