I know there are lots of LR4 performance issues floating around, but I havent been having the normal develope modue issues. My issues are more related to general catalog loading and responsivene
Basically my catalogs tend to slow down drastically over a couple days of useage until they are pretty much useless. When I first import in a catalog they seem to be pretty quick, previews load correctly and when i go to develope it loads up in a couple seconds. Give it a couple days or a few hours of useage though and all of a sudden the catalog will refuse to load images that were not already in cache and trying to open an image will cause the LR to come to a hault and just sit there. If you leave it for a few hours it will eventually load them up usually. I have lost a couple catalogs to this issue. Closing the program and reopening usually results in LR not opening at all. Windows wont even let me kill LR through taskmanager sometimes. I usually have to log out and log back in, but sometimes it will still say the catalog is currently in use.
Running window7 64bit, i7 2700k, 16bg ram, intel 320 ssd (os, LR, and LR raw cache 8gb), nvidia 240gtx, images drive is a seagate 7200k 2TB drive. Raw files are from a d800 and d700. Seems to be more issues with the d800 files though.
Any suggestions for solving this issue? I honestly have gotten to the point where I have to back up my catalogs as jpegs daily and often times to complete a wedding I need to use 2-3 different catalogs. LR3 had no issues at all on the same system.
Consider a full OS wipe and restore, or trying to convert to DNGs before editing.
Have you tried File->Optimize Catalog? You should be doing this regularly.
When an image is very slow to load, is it an image that has a lot of local corrections (spot removal, graduated filter, adjustment brush)?
Are you having problems with other programs operating slowly? Is your video driver up to date?
Optimizing the catalog will either crash LR or do nothing. The images that are slow to low are often times images that havent even been touched yet. Lets say I download a wedding with around 2500 images. Usually would take me about 3-4 days to edit through, so by day 3 or 4 the last 1000 images or so wont even load as previews anymore, and the only work around I have found is to litterally create a new catalog for the last 1000 or so. I have also had small catalogs do this as well. I had an engagement shoot with around 300 images in its own catalog and about 3 hours into editing it just stopped loading previews for all the unedited images and even after a restart would never continue. I have catalogs from LR3 that had 20k images in them. Now I am terrified to run more than a couple hundred for fear of never being able to access that catalog.
GFX driver was last updated in may. Will check for something new.
My thoughts now are either 1) that my HDD with my images on it is either failing, or has some kind of issue with the chipset, 2) LR is not correctly allocating system memory never seen it jump above 2gbs of ram useage 3) LR4 is just a dog 4) D800 files are just too big 5) antivirus or some other background program is messing with my memory or cache.
Other programs seem to be running just fine. I run PS CS5 and it seems to never slow down, it has been benched to run right on par with a system of mine's caliber
Thanks for the help.
Before you ditch LR joergeske, I'd take it as the canary in the coalmine and check your hard drives and maybe run memtest on memory too. Something certainly sounds odd, particularly if optimizing is crashing.
Make sure you have enough free space on your system drive. LR uses it for temp HD space when optimising catalogues. I use a small ( 128gB SSD ) system drive ( data drives are now 3TB ) with 4 partitions on it for multiple booting. easy to run out of space
