Firework Filters in Illustrator?

Jun 30, 2012 3:29 PM

For all the depth Illustrator have, I'm a bit surprised by the lack of certain features. For one is ease of italicizing, but after a googlesearch I discovered there's nothing I do can do.

Anyhow, one of the other things I missed most about Fireworks, is the Filters on any objects. Specifically, the filter I miss most is the Color Fill. The Color Fill filter is great because it was an easy fast way to make things appear darker / shaded. I simply fill with black, and set opacity to however I want. Is there a fast away to achieve similar results in Illustrator?

Apply a second fill to the object via appearance panel. Fill that with black and set its opacity and blend mode to whatever you like

    On your other note:

You mean, there are no other options apart from (a) selecting the Italic version of your font, or (b) entering a slant angle to create faux italics?

You're correct. Shear is object level, not text level. But you really should use a font which provides an italic face if you need italics within a text block.

There are literally millions of fonts with italics. If you feel Arial is your only choice... then okay. But that, to me, would be a problem between the chair and the screen, not an issue with what is on the screen.

The Appearance Panel has several buttons across the bottom of it. One of the buttons is "Add New Fill".

You may find that actual paid fonts, rather than the often poorly constructed free fonts at dafont.com, will provide better options where italics are concerned.

If you group several objects, you can use the Appearance Panel to apply a color fill to the entire group. If you select a layer by option/alt-clicking the little circle to the right of the layer name in the Layer Panel, you cna then use the Appearance Panel to apply a color fill to an entire layer.
