Histogram Panel

Jun 24, 2012 8:16 PM

Please help! I have Photoshop Elements #9. The Histogram panel is popping up for no reason randomly. I was told to hold down Shift, Ctrl and Alt key simoutaneously when the panel was popping up randomly and "shaking". This did work, but I want to correct the problem so the Histogram panel only appears when selected in Windows. Thanks.

The histogram panel should not shake no matter when you are seeing it. Are you sure this is the PSE histogram panel and not something else with a histogram in it?

The ctrl+alt+shift thing is done when restarting the editor. Hold the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

Then I very strongly suspect that whatever it is, it isn't the PSE histogram panel. Try taking a screenshot the next time it appears and post it here.

Did you follow Barbara's original advice to rebuild the PSE Preferences?  Hold down your Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys when launching the Editor and keep the keys held down until you see a prompt asking if you want to delete the Preferences.  Answer "Yes" and they will be re-built.  You might have to minimize any open windows in order to see that prompt.

Jim, I really don't understand exactly what you're doing, but you should exit PSE completely and then do the CAS keys when launching the Editor.

To post a screenshot you must come to the forum and use the camera button above the message composition area. You can't send attachments by email.

    Jim,

Glad to hear it's looking better.

The PSE Editor (and the Organizer) store their Preferences in files on your drive.  In addition to the preferences you customize by using Edit...Preferences, the files also hold other information that the program uses when it starts up to display the panels, etc.  Unfortunately, PSE is notorious for corrupting its Preferences files.  When you used the CAS keys and answered "Yes" to the prompt to delete the Preferences, the corrupted Preferences file was deleted and a new one created with default settings.  Since the Preferences files are used by PSE to set up so much of its display and functionality, that's why re-setting the Preferences is often suggested to cure goofy PSE behaviour.
