If I edit a clip in the Multitrack View which results in the length of that clip being reduced, when I return to the Multitrack View I see a warning which I can dismiss. However, the track still shows as the same length as it was before the edit (with the end of the track being filled with silence).
Is there any way to get Multitrack View to automatically (or manually) reload clips which have changed in length?

I'm not quite sure what you are asking for here. When you edit a clip in File view (or whatever we're calling it this week) so that its total length is reduced from the size it was inserted into MV as, when you reopen MV it's still there, with a warning, yes. You absolutely wouldn't want anything else to happen to the session as a result of this, because it would then put all the other clips after it potentially in the wrong place - and what would you have it do with a clip that was underneath the one you just edited, but which was untouched?
So, what exactly are you hoping for here?

In the following screenshot, you'll see that the clip in Track 2 appears to have a long section of silence at the end:
However, the clip itself doesn't have any silence at the end: Multitrack View just seems to display the clip like this after I've reduced the length of the clip in the Waveform view and dismissed the warning.
Is there any way to get Multitrack View to show the clip's actual length?

Well the easiest thing is just to place the cursor over the end of the clip to that you see a red right closed bracket symbol, click and drag to the left until the silence disappears. It is still there in the original file. If you want it permanently removed you will have to go to the Waveform view and delete the silence and resave the file.
The details of each clip in the multitracks ie size, position and details about the audio content get created when you create the sesx file.
They will change in the sesx file as they are changed in the multitrack
In your case you haven't changed the size of the clip in MT but you have changed the details (ie length of the audio content of the clip) in edit view
If you want to change the length of the clip you can do as ryclark suggests or you can do as shown in the picture below (click to animate)
No this is not done automatically from the edit view.
