desaturation

I made a copy of a layer (a colored photo that I downloaded from Bridge) and I was messing around with the adjustment settings like desaturation.  However, when I clicked on the adjustments tab most of the selections were greyed out.  Do I need to go up to color settings and change them to fix the problem?

    I do my Desaturation with an Adjustment Layer (or very selectively with the Desaturate Sponge Tool). Are your adjustments grayed out, with Adjustment Layer>Hue, Brightness, Saturation?

     

    If so, then what is the Color Mode?

    Hi,

    Yes all of these selections were greyed out.  My color mode was RGB color...is this what it should have been in?

    Is your image file 16 bit?  most tools only work with 8 bit.

     

    Can you save as .jpg?

    How did you arrive at that observation?

    Probably not directly related to the problem you're seeing, but take a look at the Image - Adjustments - Black and White filter and it's corresponding adjustment layer.

    Hello!

    thauser79, is a layer mask targeted in the layers panel?  A screenshot would help, as would some basic info about your setup, the version of Photoshop that you are using.

     

    You seem to be asking a lot of basic questions, did you take some time to peruse the user guide? http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop.html (a book is useful too, otherwise, you'll hit a lot of frustrating stops if you do not learn the basics first)

     

    Christoph, I think that Doug meant that most filters work only with 8bits files.

    hi!  how would i be able to find if the image is a 16 bit?  I did save it as a jpg however

    Yes this is an overstatement by me....I meant image tools...many image and color operations only work with 8 bit images not 16 bit....but lots of other tools still work

     

    For example can't save a 16 bit image to .jpg (file format limitation, not a Ps limitation per se) or applying many filters

     

    check image bit setting: menu bar, image, mode: _____

    I meant image tools.

    Can’t we just use the term »Tool« in the context of discussing Photoshop to signify what is also referred to as »Tools« in the documentation (Move Tool, Type Tools etc.)?
