Hi All,
Been using Speedgrade on set for some time and it now being part of Creative Cloud opens it up to a wider audience at a great price. The big thing for me is SG has Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) tools intact as opposed to other systems where the S3D tools are an additional cost.
Now my goal is modest S3D post production workflow entirely within what comes with Creative Cloud and is aimed at features, commercials and documentaries.
I have the basic pipline working great, dailies QC, colour, alignment, transcode to editorial media in SG. Edit NLE and output EDL. SG conforms EDL from NLE in S3D for colour/depth finish.
I am in the process of writing the workflow up and was wondering if anyone has any related questions?
I plan to post the outline workflow here when done.

Here is my rough draft.
Clone camera data and put into Left/Right folder structure so that
Speedgrade can automatically link L/R, very important step as this
must work for final EDL conform.
Set flips/flops, frame sync, QC S3D, set HIT, primary grade with option
for secondary correction, keyframes etc. or just apply a pre-made
look.
Render out DNxHD 1080p editorial media as side by side and or master
eye, with clips matching source filename (Src.PathElement.0) and
timecode (source).
Sync audio and edit.
Limit to cuts and dissolves.
Anything more involved needs to treated as a VFX shot.
Output EDL and guide track from NLE.
Select Timeline/Reels view to show Reels/clips used in EDL.
Using SG desktop (media browser) navigate to root folder for the
cloned source footage (containing Left/Right folder structure) view
"Sequences from folder + subtree" then click "Load from Desktop"
Any clips that do not connect can be manually dropped onto the relevant reel.
Also if L/R do not connect then this can be fixed manually in the
Stereo3D/Reel Assignment panel.
Drop in VFX shots, titles (with alpha) as required.
Confirm conformed original media and vfx shots match guide track.
Perform colour and depth grade, pan/scan to 1920x1080 if required etc.
Render out suitable video masters 3D L/R, 3D SbS, 2D as DPX, DNxHD
220, Uncompressed codec etc.
Take video master back to NLE to add multi-track audio and render out
deliverables.
Thanks to Lin & Pat.

Pretty sure you need the Quadro SDI output card.

Not used the DeckLink Extreme 3D with Speedgrade so can't comment.
What are you going to use as a 3D display?

Thank you for your reply.
The Decklink is both in and out so I do not think the SDI card will be necessary. If I am wrong I'll add it.
The monitor will be a ViewSonic 24" V3D245.
I am planning an ASUS P9X79 Pro socket 2011 X79 ATX motherboard; Intel I7-3770, Corsair 16g DDR3-1600 ram (x2), with Sandisk SSD (2x480g, 1x240g).
The use will be process 3D and create theatrical 2k trailers and institutionals.
Check out DeckLink: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/decklinkhdextreme/
I am going with the Quatro 4000 along with the DeckLink in/out. As live broadcast/steaming is not planned I feel the configuration will be adequate to my intended use. Ovbiously I might be in error however I don't feel disposed to shell out $3m for a separate SDI card at this point.
Based upon my projected configeration do you have other observations?
Hey Guys,
I'm a complete beginner to SpeedGrade and it's 3D functions. I'm having trouble finding teaching resources for the software. I can't find any documentation at all on the Adobe site.
Where could one find a manual or tutorials for very basic use. Specifically dealing with stereo 3D files (generated with Maya if that matters).
Thanks.
The short answer to your inquiry appears to be: "you can't."
From what I have been able to glean from all of the inquires posted is that Adobe may consider adding 3D support sometime in the distant future.
It appears that Cineform is the way to go if 3D is what you have in mind. May I suggest viewing this and hopefully some of your question may be answered.
Hi Jonathan,
If you (or anyone else who may have some advice) are still writing replys to this thread I have a few questions as someone who hasn't worked much with 3D. My goal is pretty straight forward but I'm really having a hard time finding good resources for editing in 3D. If you could help with some advice it would be greatly appreciated.
I would like to add a (1) a 3D title and (2) a small 3D image to a short video clip that would be played in 2D. So, the only things that would need to be in 3D are the title and a small image that I have drawn and have saved as a TIFF. Both of these would be shown in 3D for a brief time while the movie plays in 2D. If you could point me to an educational resource that would be fantastic. (Note: I am presently using Adobe CS6 Master Suite).
Secondly, this is a little more tricky, I would like project this to a classroom of students (this is all about making learning fun). I am willing to purchase a somewhat cheap 3D projector (say around $2500) and a silver screen. I would like to make the videos so that the students could wear the polarized glasses (as opposed to anagrap). Do you have any experence with 3D projectors and if so, do you have a suggestio on one that might be relatively cheap and work with the editing software (like a home entertainment system).
Many Thanks,
Michael
