Runtime Error in PSE 9 Editor

When I attempt to access the editor in PSE9 either directly or from the organizer I get the following message:

 

"Runtime Error!

Program:...s\Adobe\PhotoshopElements9\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."

Uninstalling and reinstalling PSE9 has no effect on this error.

    You will get much better answers in the PSE forums. Perhaps you need to trash some prefs or the catalog. And by all means do tell what computer you are running this on.

    Thanks, Mylenium. I'm using an H-P 32bit desktop w/ 2.0GHz Intel, 3GB RAM, Windows 7 Professional OS.

    Have you installed the latest PSE9 patch (version 9.0.3)?

    The patch dowloads ok, but the installation fails and gives Error Code:

    Error Code: U44M1P2003.

    I had to turn off backup/synch in Preferences, and then manually downloaded Patch 9.0.3 and got it installed. However, the problem with the Runtime Error still exists.

    OK, glad you got the 9.0.3 patch installed.

     

    Next question:  Do you have any 3rd party plugins installed?  If so, remove them and reboot.

    Did as you suggested and removed 3rd-party plugins and then rebooted. Problem with Runtime still persists.

    OK, let's see if the Event Log has more info:  Start...Control Panel...Administrative Tools...Event Viewer.  Expand the "Windows Logs" folder in the left panel, then select the "Application" log.  Look for any items with a red icon and that refer to PhotoshopElements.  Copy the error info into a message here.

    Oh, great...an "unknown" faulting module!

     

    There's not a lot to go on, so I can only offer a couple of general troubleshooting suggestions:

    1. Re-set the Editor's Preferences by holding down your Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys when launching the Editor and keep them held down until you see the prompt asking if you want to delete the Preferences.  Answer "Yes" and they will be re-built.  You may have to minimize any open windows in order to see that prompt.
    2. If you have manually enabled the TWAIN interface for scanning, see this Adobe document:
