Verdana font does not look good

I'm using the Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif font, as requested by site owner, on a site. From reading on Google Verdana seems to be a very popular font, designed for display on computer monitors. For some reason it looks really bad on my monitor. All blocky/jagged and not anti-aliased.

I am using dell 2007 Flat Panel 20" monitor at 1600 x 1200 resolution.

I think I shod be able to safely use Verdana but am concerned about the way it looks on my system. Is Verdana "safe" ? does the monitor high resolution cause this problem.?

Thanks for any advice on this.
