I guess this could be a setting that's switched off or perhaps even a bug in the software.
thanks for the replies. I tried adjusting those settings but it hasn't helped. I think the installation of Audition has become buggy, that's what it feels like (although just based on this one issue).
I press play or spacebar and the sound plays but the marker won't move and also I realized the playback meter freezes too (after quickly registering a sound and freezing at that initial volume level).
Auto-scrolling won't happen either with the setting mentioned above (i tried this on and off)... i zoom in and no auto-scroll
Otherwise the program works fine. (this is with cs 5.5)
I suspected that's what you meant. What OS and audio device are you using? Often, this is a symptom of poor or unhappy drivers. The audio stream plays fine, but the acknowledgement signals from the device aren't making it back to Audition. Generally, reinstalling or updating the device drivers resolves this (sometimes they just need a good slap to wake up) but in other cases, there's a flaw in the device or drivers which the manufacturer needs to rectify.
I have this situation with a few devices. I love the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra for on-the-go recording, but every 30 seconds, the meters and playhead freeze. I see it on multiple systems, OS's, and applications, so it's definitely something device-related. I've seen some similar issues with an older Line6 TonePort.
Basically ASIO bypasses a lot of the audio rubbish built into windows and therefore can offer much lower latency if that's an issue for you. Also, all the basic sound tasks in Windows use the MME so some people find that things like sample rate and bit depth can be mysteriously reset by other processes in Windows causing periods of head scratching.
I've never used NI but just had a look at their user forums and there seems to be all sorts of discussion of problems with many of their recent drivers. Lot's of people are harking back to an early Version 2 being the desireable one to use (dunno if it works with Windows 7) but problems seem to be a common complaint. I notice that Version 2.0.15 is still posted on the NI web site (highly unusual to keep supplying something that old) which lends credence to the idea of problems.
Anyhow, it might be worth downgrading your driver to one of th earlier drivers they still have available for download.
