Videos are jerky

When I am editing in adobe premiere elements 10 I press the play button to watch but the video plays jerky. It isn't smooth. Why does it play jerky?

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately, we will need a lot more information to help. This ARTICLE goes into detail, on what info would be so very useful.

Also, is there a red line above the Clips in the Timeline? If so, hit Enter, to Render the Timeline. Does that help things?

What KIND of AVI files... from what camera? (exact brand and model)

I have a windows 7 laptop. The camera the AVI files are from is a cameliox100 (toshiba) camcorder. The file formats on it are AVI (h.264)/ jpeg. That is all I know and can find on the information you need. Does this help?

OK, PrE does not recognize the H.264 CODEC in the AVI wrapper.

That is a relatively new scheme, that camera mfgrs. have started adopting. PrPro, PrE's big-brother, also did not support that scheme, until a very recent update. I anticipate that PrE 11 might add that. Though it IS non-standard, there ARE several camera mfgrs. who have decided to use that. To what end, I have no clue. It is almost as though each camera mfgr. decides to do something totally off-the-wall, so that the buyers cannot edit the footage, except via the camera's software.

We also are seeing a lot of highly-modified versions of the MJPEG CODE, and some, wrapped in the least-standard wrappers possible.

They have to be trying to eliminate all editing programs from the mix.

Also, John T. has a link (I cannot find mine right now), on H.264 in an AVI wrapper, and I believe that it has tips on how to re-wrap it, to a traditional container, IIRC. I am sure that he'll be back in a moment, and have that link handy. I believe that the method relies on free, open source utilities.

At least one other brand that wraps H.264 inside AVI allows the option of using a MOV wrapper, which works... the specifications page for this camera only shows AVI as the wrapper

The 854115 discussion I posted before includes a technical discussion of using another product to re-wrap the Camileo files, which the OP may, of course, do to see if the result will then work in Premiere Elements (the previous discussion was about Premiere Pro)

Or, use the included software... from the Toshiba page... CD (driver, manual, Arcsoft)

I have never used Arcsoft, but since it was included by Toshiba, I will presume it will edit the files

As always, thank you for providing the OP with that link. I thought I had it bookmarked, but if so, cannot find it on my system. That is the one that I referred to in one, or the other, of these two threads.

Speculation on my part, but I would not be surprised to see Adobe add some of the odd format and CODEC combos to PrE, in the near future. Until then, re-wrapping might be the best, or only, way to go.

Going to Arcsoft, I find http://www.arcsoft.com/mediaconverter/ which SAYS it will convert between many different video formats

If that is what is on the Toshiba CD, use it to convert to something that will edit in Premiere Elements

I don't have a Toshiba camera... but since you do, and the files will not edit in Premiere Elements, you need to tell Adobe that you want the files added to the next version

Unless Steve Grisetti, our tireless MOD here, decides to remove one, or the other, they have a purpose, so I vote that they stay.

There are basically four reasons that folk come here:

To get answers/solutions to their questions/problems.
To Search for answers that have already been posted, and will help them solve their problem.
To read the forum and learn.
To help others with questions/problems.

For the second and third, having the threads on the forum, is helpful - they continue to assist others, later in time.

So when I render my movie clips right after I save my project. Later on I open the project back up and the renders don't stay. So I have to render the clips again. Why won't the renders stay?

I have the same question...I saved my project, fully rendered, but when I open it, it has to be rendered again. And I don't understand why only some parts need to be rendered...all my clips are saved in the same folder...

Note that this failure to save renders was a problem in versions 8 and 9 but was corrected in version 10.

However, some Windows users still experience it in version 10 if their project and render files are on an external drive, which Windows sometimes misidentifies as a new drive whenever it's rebooted.

Without knowing more about either of your systems, I can't see which may be at work in your case. But, if neither of these, make sure you've got the latest version of Quicktime from Apple.com, per the program's requirements.

I have Premiere Elements 9, so that might be the issue...
I am on a Windows PC, and everything I do is saved to our company's server...which is obviously an external drive.

So, I just have to live with it?

What would Quicktime have to do with it?
