RH8 issue with popups

Feb 24, 2010 7:44 AM

Hi there,

I am using RH8 on Windows XP. I am working on a very large, legacy project that has been around for ages.

In many, many topics there are popups which take you to a secondary topic for syntax information. Each subheading in the secondary topic has a bookmark and these popups throughout the help link back to the relevant section of this secondary topic.

However, since RH8 (I upgraded from RH5) when I click on the popup link in the webhelp output, it very often does not take me to the correct location of the bookmark referenced. It pops up several lines below that bookmark, so that the wrong heading is shown.

It seems to work ok in IE, but not in Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome (I know it's not supported, but my boss uses it!).

As our users use either Linux or UNIX, they don't use IE, so I need it to work in the other browsers. It definitely used to work correctly, as I've tested older RH5 output in all of the aforementioned browsers.

It doesn't seem to matter if you use auto-sizing popups or custom-sized popups, the same thing happens.

Anyone have any idea why this might be happening? It's very frustrating!

Thanks in advance,

Feebeegeebee.

    Hi, feebee...

I don't have the solution for you, but I suspect we're having similar problems. My company, too, went from RH 5 to RH 8 (apparently, not a good thing). My difficulty is that hotspots fall out, when you replace the base graphic. When I try to fix the hotspots to point to the right topic, then compile, it still does not work.

If you find a solution to your issue, please let me know! (My topic is hotspots not working).

Have you applied the patches? See Using RH8 on my site for some information on popup issues in RH8

    Peter,

I checked your site but could not find the correct patches. Would you please point me in the right direction? Also, should I assume the patches are specific for those upgrading from RH 5 directly to RH 8?

Since we are on a government account, I will need to have our technical support team apply the patches.

Thanks very much for pointing us toward the correct patches.

The patches are on Adobe's site and are accessed via the Help menu. You have to have admin rights or get admin to run from there.

    Peter,

I have RH for Word 8.0, build 8.0.0.203

Does that mean I have the latest with all the patches applied? I can't find it on the adobe site where it says what build I'm supposed to have.

    Thanks,

    Bobbie

You hadn't indicated you were using RoboHelp for Word. Please see the sticky topic Before You Post.

8.0.2 is the patched version but now that you have added that you are using RoboHelp for Word I suspect you need another file. Even with the patches applied, there was a problem with the hotspot editor in that edition.

    See this thread. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/92958?tstart=0

Apply the patches before using the file that can be downloaded.

    Peter,

Thanks for pointing me toward the right thread. Working with our admin person I applied the patches and updated the DLL file according to your site's instructions. Result--perfect!

When I get a minute I'll add a post to the forum.

    Thanks a million!!

    Two ideas.

Try running Tools > Update DHTML.

The second is to add a second bookmark so that you call different bookmarks to the same place. I haven't tried it but it feels like it is worth a try.

What about making the first link go to the first word of the heading and the second link go to the second word or the line above?

Is the popup being closed between clicks?

I don't think this trick will work here but try putting a ? before the second # symbol.

Beyond that you can report it but I am not sure if it is a bug or just the way HTML works. Can you set up a similar test in Dreamweaver or any HTML editor?
