How do I restore the paragraph catalog to its original state?

Jul 9, 2012 7:20 AM

Tags: #paragraph_catalog #paragraph_tags

For a previous book, I deleted some tags from the out-of-the-box paragraph catalog. Now I don't have the full set of OOTB tags for use in a new book.

I do have an old document with all OOTB tags, and I can import those tags to the new book. But it would be a lot more convenient to simply go back to the original catalog. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,

JP

    Open both the documents

Goto File-->Import and select the one that you want to import from one doc to other. We have couple of options there.

If, by "out of the box," you're talking about the default tags that come

with FrameMaker when you first install it, all you have to do is open a

new, blank document and they will be there as the only tags. Then you

can import them into any other documents you want.

Or did you alter FrameMaker itself to change the values of these

defaults? For example, if I recall correctly, you can edit the

fminit\custom file and save it to make FM use defaults that you set.

(Someone please correct me if I am remembering the wrong file for this.

I wouldn't someone to mess something up.) So, if you did that, you need

to restore the original version of the file.

FrameMaker is requiring a template? Are you sure you are following the

right steps? To open a new, blank document:

    1. Choose File> New> Document (or type Ctrl+N). The "New" dialog opens.

    2. Click on either the Portrait, Landscape, or Custom buttons at the top

of the dialog box. This will create a new, blank document, with default

    ("out of the box") tags.

    3. Open the Paragraph Catalog. The following default paragraph formats

    should be listed:

         Body

         Bulleted

         CellBody

         CellHeading

         Footnote

         Heading1

         Heading2

         HeadingRunIn

         Indented

         Numbered

         Numbered1

         TableFootnote

         TableTitle

         Title

You can then import these tags into any document or book:

    1. Open both the file you want to import from (the new, blank document)

and the file you want to import to.

    2. Click in the file you want to import into. (Or, in a .book file,

select as many files as you want to import into.)

    3. Choose File> Import> Formats. Select the document you want to import

from in the "Import from Document" dropdown list, and deselect

everything else but Paragraph Formats (if you want to import only

    paragraph formats).

    4. Click Import*

    5. That should do it. The default paragraph formats should now be added

    to your existing document.

    • Warning! If you have formats in your existing document with the same

name, they will be overwritten with the properties of the imported

formats bearing that same name in the blank document. So, if you

customized those paragraph formats in your existing document, your

    customizations will be lost.

My apologies if I'm telling you anything you already know. I have no

idea if you are a new or experienced user.

Deleting a paragraph format from the Paragraph Catalog permanently

removes it from THAT document and ONLY that document. It affects no

    other document, existing or future.
