I don;t understand what you are trying to do here Alistair. You can apply the sidecar.xml file to a folio at any time to change metadata or the article ordering. You can apply it multiple times. The documentation contains good instructions on sidecar.xml as does the forum (search for sidecar). THe biggest gotcha is that the sidecar.xml file needs to be moved outside the folio directory structure if you want to edit and apply it multiple times.

Hi John

I've been using DPS for over a year, and using the sidecar.xml for over a year, and its always been in the root Folio folder with my articles. And that still works now, what doesnt work at the moment is if I update the sidecar after the folio has been uploaded.

If I've missed some kind of update, (which appears to be the case) sorry.

So what I can gather, and what you've just said, is I take the side car out of my main Folio folder and import via folio builder each time I want to update. Cool thats easy.

That's how it works. This behaviour was added a couple of releases ago and was probably easy to miss.

I jump back on this (late) one : The sidecar xml update alone seems to require to process again all the present data, images, and send again online, when it only has to change properties and the order of the pages. Shouldn't there be a way to update ONLY this meta file in the folio/different articles ? Just thinking of the process and bandwidth for a 300MB folio when a 50k xml is all that changed…

yes this clearly is a problem in the architecture and maybe a bug (or

needed?) but it should not download (in fact update without the possibility

to preview while loading) the whole folio again. that's painfull,

especially after 5pm in Europe when the servers slow down.

and of course, there is always a deadline in exactly that night

perhaps you can explain the steps you are doing? I just went through the process of creating a folio, adding a bunch of articles, then importing a sidecar.xml file to set the metadata and order for the articles I created. It happened immediatley and it did not do any additional processing of the article content I uploaded previously. Please make sure the sidecar.xml file you are imprting is in it's own folder (not placed aloong with the previously imported content).

I'm using CS5.5 on a Mac.

I have to say, I've not found any issues with updating the sidecar in terms of article descriptions or re-ordering either.

so, sidecar.xml in a folder outside of the folio folder. in folio builder, select import, then chose multiple articles, select the sidecar folder that updates very quickly. Then in my experience the folio on the update just does a quick flick of an update and changes are done, certainly not a reload of assets etc.

but adding/updating the metadata with the sidecar sill forces the Adobe

Viewer on the iPad to download the whole folio again. Or am I doing

something wrong?

You're right, Johannes. Updating the metadata of an article using any method causes the entire article to be downloaded in the viewer during the update. That's a separate issue from putting the sidecar.xml file in its own folder to update a folio's metadata.
