We just upgraded all of our department's computers and also the programs from inDesign CS2 to Creative Cloud/inDesign CS6. Whenever we try to open any of our old files saved on a TerraStation, shared by the department, it will take a significantly long time to open the file. InDesign will freeze up for 10-20 mins and the file will eventually open. I suspect the problem might have something to do with the fonts linking up, but I'm not sure. Any help or insight please?
(also, if we create a new document in cs6, save, then close, the file will open back up in seconds when re-opened. So I think that rules out our computers not being able to handle the new indesign as far as system requirements)
@Bob – I had some issues open up INX files or even IDML files from older InDesign versions. Cannot test, if INX from CS2 will move page objects around like my tests with CS4 showed with a specific constellation of master pages applied.
Here an example showing the pages (no error) in InDesign CS4:
Here the pages out of an INX from CS4 opened in CS6:
Maybe you could build a test case and look for yourself.

Tried both of your suggestions:
Opening from the hard drive and it still stalled up....
And we plugged in one of the old computers with cs2, and strangely those files loaded slow in cs2 now as well....\
so.. the problem must be with some of the fonts and pics linked back to files on the network I guess??? I don't know, this is so frustrating! (but thanks for your help!)
