Lighting effects - on screen controls aren't showing up?

So, this is pretty much all I see:

LEonscreenhelp.png

I can't move or do anything with the light. It's just stuck! I've looked at other screens of people using lighting effects and there's (obviously) suppposed to be some sort of on screen controls. And for some odd reason mine aren't showing up. I've been having this issue for days now and I'm not sure why it's not working. Also, I'm using Windows 7. In addition, my alignment buttons seem to always be greyed out, or "unclickable". Thanks for you time!

Did it ever work in the past?

What happens if you press Ctrl+H when your in the lighting effects window?

Are you talking about the alignment buttons with the Move Tool selected?

They are usually greyed out unless you have an active selection or more than one layer selected.

For example try Select>All. Do the first 6 buttons become active in the tool options bar?

    more on the align options:

I guess your image shows a layer in the Lighting Effects filter interface, and the layer has previous lighting baked into the pixels.

Are you applying lighting to a layer then later trying to adjust that light?

For that ability, the layer will have to be converted to a Smart Object before applying lighting to it, otherwise the lighting will change the pixels of the layer, just like any other filter.

Edit: Sorry! Ignore this post. There should, of course, be on-screen controls for the light that's listed in the bottom-right panel.

Is your display driver up to date?  Visit the web site of the maker of your video card and seek out their latest display driver release that matches your hardware and operating system.

What kind of computer is it (desktop or laptop)?

In Photoshop, choose the Help - System Info... menu item, copy the content, and paste it here (you may want to delete your hashed serial number).  That will tell us what kind of display hardware it has and whether your driver is up to date.

It should work in 64 bit mode (it does for me), BUT...  Your display driver is definitely out of date.  The current ATI release is 8.980.0.0

The problem is, with a laptop, that your display drivers usually have to come from the laptop maker, and you've said they don't have a newer driver.  I suggest you contact HP and let them know that their current display driver for your system doesn't work with Photoshop CS6 x64.  I don't know whether they might respond, but it's worth a shot.

There are some things you can adjust in the Photoshop preferences that might help to get things going for you...

Open the Photoshop 64 bit version, then go into Edit - Preferences - Performance.  Ensure the [  ] Use Graphics Processor checkbox is checked, then click the [Advanced Settings...] button.  Assuming it's not already on that setting, try changing the Mode to Normal, then close and restart Photoshop to test.

If that doesn't help, try changing the Mode to Basic, close, restart, test.

You might try resetting the photoshop preferences for the 64 bit version of photoshop cs6, but it may be as Noel pointed out that your display driver is out of date.

Restore all preferences to default settings

      •      #
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings.

             #

New Preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.
