I am just trying to install Reader on a PC with a fresh install of XP Home. System totally hangs at 71%. Any Ideas ?

You may want to try download the full Reader installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
Did you update XP to SP3?
Yes, SP 3 was installed first.
And what happened when you tried the full Reader installer?
