"Retro" Drop Shadows?

Jul 16, 2012 6:11 PM

Not much of an Illustrator user, but from how common this type treatment is (especially on retro t-shirt designs lately) I can't imagine it's always done "by hand"...

Is there an easy way for a novice to pull this off?

The most basic means is to use two copies of the font. The top one has an outline color the same as the background, then offset. In this case the top copy is offset up a little and to the left.

Here is a video of another method the advantage of this method is the art acts as if it is one object and the type is live and if you change the spelling the effect will automatically update.

For instance i changed the spelling only using the text at the character level and the other fills up date the other methd you would have to do this the the other text object as well.Screen Shot 2012-07-16 at 11.04.34 PM.png

There are fonts available which are close to what you've posted.

    Gelato Script is one.

This isn't exactly like your sample, the font is slightly different and I didn't spend a great deal of time trying to mimic the swash placements and curves, But it can all be done relatively easily if you have the fonts.
