Hi there,
as far as I know a parallel installation of Reader and Acrobat on one single PC was not supported by Adobe in times of Version 8 and earlier.
Is this still the case for Version 10?
In the past we got many issues reported regarding the parallel usage of there two applications and we need to know if we have to uninstall the automatically installed Reader if a user is requesting the installation of Acrobat.
Is there something official from Adobe regarding the support of this scenario?
Regards,
Andreas
Looks like there is but it needs to be updated for Acrobat and Reader X.

Hi Andreas,
With the Acrobat X/Adobe Reader X release, we now support having both Acrobat & Reader on the same machine: http://blogs.adobe.com/pdfitmatters/2011/03/installing-acrobat-x-and-r eader-x-on-the-same-machine.html
Previously, while it was possible to parallel versions (Acro 9 & Reader 9) installed on the same computer, it was not a supported configuration.
We do not support having multiple versions on the same machine (for example: Acro 8 & Acro 9 or Acro 7 & Reader 9).
Please let us know if you have any questions.

HI Sabian, hi David,
thanks for your reply.
So as far as I know there are several versions of Adobe Reader and Acrobat in use at my company. Currently the user gets a Reader version pre-installed on a new PC included in the OS image. If know an Acrobat installation is requested Acrobat will be installed in parallel by silent installation.
Is my understanding of your article correct that we should remove Adobe Reader if Acrobat will be installed with every newer version then X?
But even with a parallel installation of the X versions of both I see some issues here at my company. We have applications in use (e.g. Documentum), where it is necessary that the PDF will be opened in a browser with Acrobat for annotations and comments. How can I influence this if the user selected Reader as default viewer in the Customization Wizard. We can not handle this Wizard one more then 5k PC's manually.
Would it then be a possible way to also remove Reader X version from PC's where Acrobat is goind to be installed to prevent this issue? even if the parallel usage of version X is supported by Adobe?
Kind Regards,
Andreas
Hi Andreas,

If the version of Reader is 9 or earlier, yes, it should be removed. If the installed version of Reader is Reader X, it's up to you as to whether or not to leave it installed. I would recommend installing only Acrobat unless your user has a need for having Reader installed too.

If you're creating an MST w/ the Customization Wizard, Acrobat will default to snagging default viewer status. Here's a thread that discusses when someone desires the opposite behavior, but I think you might find it useful: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4458544 You should also check out Page 34 of the Acrobat Enterprise Administration Guide: http://helpx.adobe.com/content/dam/kb/en/837/cpsid_83709/attachments/A crobat_Enterprise_Administration.pdf
