Hi, I wonder if anyone could offer some tips on achieving an effect like this:

I want to replace the Native American's head/image with my own (creating my own currency for my store's rewards program).  Thanks!

    Ken,

Just to make sure: first of all, never use existing artwork as the one shown as a starting point. Create your own. Inspiration is good, of course.

There are different ways of creating different kinds of 3D appearance, the most suitable one(s) also depending on the actual basic artwork.

If you have started on that, it may help the helpers help you.

If effect in this context means altering an existing image by choosing a menu item such as those in the Effects menu, then this is not an effect but a drawing most likely based on photo or 3D image reference. Live Trace could've also been used, but I think it is mostly manually  drawn paths or brushes

Well the image doesn't look like something engraved like a coin. Not sure if this will work but you can try Effect > Sketch > Bass Relief. Then rasterize, run the Live Trace again and change the colors of the vector paths to gold like the coin.

Here's a quick try with the image from your file using my suggestion, but if I have this job I would manually paint it over for better results.

I applied the Bass Relief effect in Photoshop because it is easier to recolor it there. I can't open your file again - the link is not working anymore, but I used a screen capture I made before from your file to recreate the images of the two steps below so, it is not exactly the same but when you file was available I copied all from it, switched to Photoshop, chose File > New  and pasted. Applied the Bass Relief effect and then used Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation with Colorize checked to recolor the image as shown on left side below. Then in Illustrator  I used Live Trace with 6 colors, output to swatches, and I got the result shown on the right side. I created 2 color gradients between the 6 colors, used select similar for each color and applied each gradient with the Gradient tool by dragging it vertically between each strip of the 5 colors (the 6th was almost white). The circle behind is just added with the Ellipse tool and a new gradient with all 6 colors of the Live Trace and positioned the color stops to match the image of the flower. That's basically it but to make it better it needs some manual touch with a brush or the pent tool. there should be some highlights and shadows added along the outlines of the flower and its leafs to make the relief appearance on the circle.
