I reinstalled Reader, repaired through the control panel and downloaded the update as recommended. and I still can not even open Reader, let alone any files. I can't open files in a browser nor any saved files on my computer. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it but I still can't open pdf files that were saved on my computer or from Internet Explorer. I can open a file from the web using Chrome so I guess that's progress. I have a PC running XP if that helps with any other tips.

Attempt to Open Adobe Reader (most recent version as of this morning that also worked fine yesterday) AcroRd32.exe shows in task manager for 2 seconds and then disappears
no events are creted for this, AV is disabled, in fact everything in msconfig but the basic windows settings is disabled.
