Hello,
I'm trying to test the possibility of publishing trainings to HTML5 for use on iPad or iPhone. In our first test, we put the HTML5 publish up on an LMS and accessed it through an iPad and iPhone. Via the iPad we used Safari. This is what happened:
First three slides did not appear (first has a single image, second has an f4v video, third has an f4v video).
We had narration throughout which did not play at all. Audio files are in WAV format.
Overall very slow
Crashed on one slide
Slow navigation on the Table of Contents.
Any suggestions about why we may be having these problems? Should we be using a different browser? Conver the F4V videos to something like MPEG or AVI? Anything helps, thanks.

f4v videos are Flash videos, aren't they? I don't know if Cp will convert them automatically. I thought you needed to use mp4 formats. Can you try converting them to mp4 and then republishing. It would be interesting to see if it makes a difference. I don't know if not being able to render the movies correctly may be affecting the performance of the overall project.

After talking to an Adobe support person, apparently F4V files won't play on iPad. I'm warry of rendering videos to MP4 because of file size. That's the whole reason I did F4V in the first place...

Have you tried playing with the settings when saving the MP4 file? I was able to cut my file size in 1/2 but changing some of the settings (i.e. bitrate) and they still looked good.

If you want Apple-Mobile device delivery, MP4 is your only choice (at least, for now) - with h.264 encoding.
As to the other items, check this post:

Is that helpful?

Yes and no, Erik. I did learn I needed to change the video format to H.264 MP4 encoding/formatting, and I recently did that. After another test, those videos still don't work. Any other ideas?

Hi RiskLMSspecialist,
Videos with codec : On2VP6 are supported for HTML5 output.
If you are publishing the videos to the local server, Local Server should be configured to play mp4 files.
After following the above instructions, if you are still facing the issue please share the sample project with us.
Upload the sample project to acrobat.com and send the link to mahajan@adobe.com
Thanks,
Mayank

Mayank,
So MP4 videos with the h.264 codec are NOT supported in HTML output??

I'm starting to think so. Though if it just takes a tweek here or there to make them work, I don't know what it would be. I'm using H.264 and it's not working when I try to view a Captivate file through an iPad. Videos just won't play, comes up as a white screen. The published project is being posted to an LMS that has never given us problems before, so I'm not sure what it is that prevents those videos from playing.
Aside from that, just the overall performance on the iPad is terrible and I don't know where the fault lies. It keeps crashing and/or freezing and I can't seem to change anything that will help that.

What config are you using for the H.264 Conversion? Here's some info that an Adobe Engineer posted a few months ago for me on another forum...even if it doesn't help for this scenario, it is definitely great reference material:
Best iPad Video settings
Follow the optimal settings to get excellent playback quality.
Video:
Codec: H.264
Size: 640*480 or 1280*720
Bitrate: 2500kbps

Could those settings actually make it impossible for the video to play on iPad? Or would they just affect quality?

I'm not sure...I haven't tested it that thoroghly. I know I was having the white video problem a while back (although I wasn't using Captivate). After I went back and played with the video settings, I was able to get it to work. Sorry I don't have more specific details but you know how it is...you do so many things that sometimes you're not sure what you did I just remember that after getting this information, I was able to get it to work. At that time, I was publishing an Interactive PDF to iBooks and the video wouldn't play (the screen was white). After I changed the video settings, I got it to work.

Break it down...
Do you have access to a plain webserver (that's setup to deliver h.264 videos - i.e. MIME Types properly set: http://forums.asp.net/t/1470612.aspx/1 )
If so, upload your MP4 file there and access it via direct URL on the iPad. Does that work?
If so, create a very simple SCO/lesson (I guess with Captivate if that's all you have) that just contains the MP4, publish that and upload to your LMS. Does that play on the iPad?

I am creating videos in After Effects and exporting mp4 with H.264 codec. I do not see the On2VP6 option in either AE or Premiere. I import these videos into Captivate 6 and they play fine in the HTML5 version in Safari and Chrome on my desktop but crash when open on a iPad in Safari. The slides without video play fine on the iPad, but once I go to the slide with a video it closes Safari completely.
I am confused about the best video output to use for HTML5 on iPad
Thanks for your help!

Technically H.264 is what you need. What I did to help actually was in After Effects, render the video in H.264, then upload that to the Adobe Media Encoder which lists iPad and iPhone as formats, so I would convert the H.264 to one of those formats. Essentially it's still H.264, but with I guess something else that makes it work.
I would also recommend viewing this discussion because I've had other video problems and this could be another solution provided by Vikram: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4770520#4770520

Thanks for your reply, however, this link (https://acrobat.com/#d=m6Vq2n63kILAldt*oihfpQ) takes me to a page with Acrobat products for sale. I do not see information about downloading these files.
I appreciate your help

Since a couple of days all links to published files on acrobat.com do not work, they have to be edited. Try to change the link to:

Hello,
When publishing to HTML5, all the videos are converted to H.264 encoded MP4 videos by Captivate. These videos play fine on iPad. In general, if the videos are not even showing up, you might want to try one simple thing. Take the MP4 video (you will be able to find it inside the published contents) and put it in your Web Server. Now request this video alone in the browser. If the video plays fine there, then you need to contact me 🙂 asgarg at adobe dot com. If the video doesn't play then you need to check your webserver. Apart from basic configuration for serving video files, iPad needs specific support from the webserver for media files (video and audio) - (http://developer.apple.com/library/safari/#documentation/AppleApplications/Reference/SafariWebConten...) . If you were seeing a grreen rotating circle for a long time, then it could be web server problem only. Also, you mentioned that the audio also didn't play, that too indicate in this direction only.
Another thing, just to isolate the issue, you can try with few slides having simple objects and no audio/video. If that is working fine, then we will know that we need to just configure everything proprly for audio and video.
Assuming this works and you got the content on iPad, if you still feel that content is running slow, then check-off the "scalable HTML" option while publishing. iOS does not behave well with the scaled contents that are changing.
Thanks,
Ashish
