Wont Preview in Pre-Compose ?

Hi !

i have been trying to fix this problem for a whole day now!

I am very new to the program and i think i might of clicked something off to disable the preview but i dont know what i pressed !

Basically, i want to preview the Pre-Compose only with the Control key so i can hear the song (Making a lyric video) but for some reason it doesnt work anymore!

 

Any ideas what can it be ? (it worked yesterday)

Using After Effects CS4 !

    What kind of audio AND video footage is in your project?  Both media container and codec, please.

    I also have to say, that the ctrl preview WORKS on the actual composition, but when i go into the Pre Compose and try to ctrl preview it, it wont let me (It did before)

    Highlight the footage in the project window.  Look at the information about it at the very top, where you see a thumbnail.  Write it down.  Report back.

     

    It sounds like you've jumped right into the deep end of the pool with AE.  That's a very, VERY bad idea.  AE contains too many ways to completely hose the uninitiated.  You can't just start using it for the first time with no knowledge of th4 AE basics and expect good things to happen.

     

    Fortunately, there's a solution to that, and you'll find it right here.

    Don't sweat being a newbie Hayden, we were all there once.  I've been using it for years, have completed feature films with it, and still feel like i know nothing.

     

    It sounds like you don't have any audio in your pre-composition.  If you have audio on the top layer and pre-compose it, it doesn't necessarily mean that it came with it.  Do you have a layer with audio in the precomp?

    That makes me feel better now lol

     

    And i have just checked, and when I go into the precomose i dont have the audio on there! is there a way to put it in there ?

    it's easy as pie.  Just grab it from the top layer.  Duplicate it in the top comp, then cut and paste it in the precomp.  Make sure it lines up!!  Also, set it as a "guide layer" from the layers menu or you risk doubling up the audio and it sounding like s**t.

    Select your audio layer, cut, then paste in your pre-comp. You can also copy and paste but there's a potential problem with that.

     

    You don't want two copies of the same audio in the same final comp. If you need a copy of the audio in the pre-comp just for reference, then make sure you turn it off when you go back to the main comp. If you don't your final render will most likely have audio problems.

    Thanks! that worked ! but it still wasnt like that before, i didnt have the audio in the pre comp! but it doesnt matter right now, as long as it works im cool

    It actually has always worked like that. If you don't have audio in a comp it can't show up in a preview.

    Ya, Rick's right.  It's always been the case.  Perhaps you haven't done it like that before?  After Effects has this fantastic ability to humiliate you every time you start her up.  Masochism is what fuels the compositor.  Without pain, we die.
