    Use the ESC key.

In the Content Collector Tool pressing ESC will remove the most recently selected item from the conveyor.

In the Content Placer Tool pressing ESC will remove the first item from the conveyor. You can cycle through the elements by pressing these arrows.

They wanted to match the behavior of previous versions of InDesign. When you are placing supported file formats (since InDesign CS3?) you can select multiple images/etc. When you have the Place cursor with a preview, you see a number that represents the number of objects to place. You can toggle through them and you can use Escape to drop the current one.

    So it's just being consistent.

I can't speak for the engineers, but I'm pretty sure they were following that logic.
