How to adjust path stroke weight?

I'm unable to adjust the weight of a path. Here's a 40 sec video (no audio, 1920x1080) that demonstrates I know how to adjust the stroke weight on a path, followed by a demo of it not working when I try to adjust it:

http://stephenbuck.org/adobe/il-point-width/point-width.html

Here's what I do in the video:

First, on a path that allows the change:

  • Select an elipse.
  • Increase the stroke weight of the elipse.
  • Control-Z to undo.
  • Decrease the stroke weight of the elipse.
  • The above demonstrates I know how to adjust the path weight (at least I think it does).

Next, on the path that doesn't allow the stroke width to be reduced:

  • Select path.
  • Increase stroke weight to demonstrate it increases.
  • Control-Z to undo.
  • Decrease the stroke weight to .25 to demonstrate it does not reduce in size.

And that's the problem.

What do I need to do to decrease the weight of the path I am trying to adjust?

Thanks,

Buck

    Buck,

The usual suspects in cases of a certain similarity are:

    1) Align to Pixel Grid, which seems to be ruled out by the X and Y values,

    2) Regional & Language setting of decimal point, which seems rules out by the ellipse case,

    3) Corrupt preferences, you may try to reversibly  Move the folder,

    4) Interference from other applications, see list in Item 7 in Other options , with the addition of FontExplorer.

sorry I understand what you talking about.

    this is my guess.

    see the file attached.

    Buck,

I had another look at the video, or rather a few looks, and it seems that you have something added to the basic width of the straight path, possibly an effect or something created in the Appearance palette/panel.

The ellipse seems to have a basic appearance with a normal Stroke Weight of 2.148pt which you are changing to 10pt and then 0.25pt, and the appearance changes consistently.

However, the straight path has a (basic) Stroke Weight of 0.5pt, much narrower than the apparent width. When you change that to 12pt, the apparent width increases, but only by a factor of  2 - 2.5 (12/0.5 = 24), and when you change to 0.25 the appearance is just about the same as for 0.5pt.

For my part you are welcome, Buck.
