Run the Acrobat/Reader cleanup tool from: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then try to re-install.
You may try running this fix from Microsoft and uninstall all traces of any versions of Reader:
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
If you want to reinstall Reader, download its full installer from
http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
After downloading, restart your computer and run the installer before doing anything else.
Hi Claudio,
Thanks for your advice. I did run fix from Microsoft and uninstalled all traces of any versions of Reader and other left-over ‘junk’ from various SW appl-s. After that restarted pc. Reinstalled Adobe reader from its full installer. But the issue not resolved. Getting the same fatal error as before and not able to open Reader.
Do you have other ideas to fix this issue?
As a last resort, you may try running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, no longer supported by MS but still available until not very long ago from http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
I have the same problem with my adobe reader. I use Windows XP. Pentium IV. Computer model HP DC 5000
Hi to All participants of this Adobe reader fatal error discussion!
Claudio - thanks for your additional advice, but unfortunately the comments on the web site you provided state next:
Project has been abandoned. You can now use Microsoft FixIt for this problem.
And we already did try to use Microsoft FixIt (per your previous note) and it did not solve the problem.
Pat - thanks for your advice. We use Norton AntiVirus provided by Symantec.
When temporary disable it - we get the same Adobe reader fatal error and the appl. is not opening.
Do you have any other ideas to fix this issue with Adobe reader?
Next thing I would try: disable Protected Mode.
But since you cannot start Adobe Reader, you cannot edit the Preferences. But I did some research, and there is a method to disable Protected Mode via the registry. I have not tried this myself, I will just pass on the method I have found in the Enterprise Administration Guide.
Please make a registry backup (System Restore Point) before manually editing the registry!
Protected Mode can be locked as enabled or disabled as follows:
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\<product name>\<version>\FeatureLockDown.
- Right click and choose New > DWORD Value.
- Create bProtectedMode.
- Right click on the key and choose Modify.
- Set the value to 0.
(1. Claudio) and (2. Pat), thanks for your comments.
1. http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459 - old Microsoft uninstall utility - I did install it and it just shows the list of current SW installed on pc, nothing else. All 'junk' was cleaned up (per your advice) with other MS product:http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
2.I did try registry update, but it did not help, same fatal error and could not open Adobe reader.
Please let me know if you have other ideas to fix this issue... ?
