Licence for download and disc

I'm considering buying Lightroom 4. Are there any differences with respect to the number of machines I can install onto between the download version and the  disc, which costs around $40 more?

No.  But you may want to post that question in the Lightroom forum.

You are limited by the EULA to two machines, where you aren't allowed to run on both at the same time. That's true no matter how you buy the product.

Go with the download version. The disk is already out of date, and the downloaded version seems to have fewer problems installing.

With most Adobe products, the contents of the disk and the files you download are identical, no difference at all. With Lightroom, each update is a full installation of the application, so the 4.1 update is better to get through a download, as you will have to download it anyway to get your disk copy up to date.

The reason the download version is cheaper is due to the lack of physical materials involved, you aren't paying for the disk, box, etc.

Really !!! Can only assume that you don't live in Europe then. Here the packaged version, which includes all that nasty packaging, the disk itself and postage, costs  €129.71 whilst the download costs €4.36 more coming in at €134.07. Guess it's one rule for the US and another for the rest of the world. Not unusual for Adobe.

You've opened a can of worms there I'm afraid, Brett.

That argument does not work in several geos where the physically shipped product is cheaper than the ESD (download only).

The reasons baffle everyone including, apparently, Adobe staffers

True, I'm not in Europe, nor know much about European priceing. From what I understand, there are different tax rates for physical software and electronically delivered software (downloads).
