I cannot save for web and devices for some reason. I get the error message shown in the screen shot below.
I'm using CS5 extended, version 12.1, 64 bit. My OS is windows 7.
It doesn't matter whether it's a JPG file or a PSD, I get the same error message, and I am unable to find a solution so far.
If Noel's suggestion of resetting preferences does not solve your issue, take a close look at all volumes, folders and files in the path. Make sure nothing there contains any illegal characters. Stick to numbers, the letters of the English alphabet, and underscores. Make sure you have no "special characters" there, no apostrophes, commas, asterisks, ampersands, quote marks, parenthesis, slashes or diacritics of any kind.
Glad to hear it worked for you.
Did you have the computer connected to a network at one time that it is not, now, or to an external drive that isn't present now? A folder path that once existed but is no longer present?
I'm thinking the path that you last saved something to isn't present, and rather than recovering from the failure to set the default there it's putting up an error. Seems like a very basic programming error.

Hmm, well that was short lived. I do have an external hard drive that I take back and forth between my desktop and my laptop, however I've never had this problem before. Now, the problem is back, and there isn't a preferences file to delete. I am having this problem on the laptop, by the way. Both machines run Windows 7 and the same version of Photoshop, and I only have this issue on the laptop (so far, lol).
The drive letter for the external drive is always the same, and it doesn't matter whether I try to do this from the C drive or the external drive, the error message is the same.
So, how can I fix this very basic programming error?
Hi,
See if this solution works (from this post):

FIXED .....
OK guys....I had this problem for the longest time & Whenever I tried to use "save to web" feature, I would get the same error.... after a lot of research & finally found a resolution.....
I wanted to take this opportunity to share the resolution why this feature was not working properly....
Here is the link where you will find what the problem was...
Basically, go to this registry location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\U ser Shell Folders
& make sure that your current "my documents" sub folders are set to:
My Music REG_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%\Music My Pictures REG_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%\PicturesMy Videos REG_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%\Videos
Personal REG_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%\Documents
etc...etc...etc....
When I fixed my registry...this error went away & I had no problems with it anymore...please post this resolution on the website for others!
Steve, this wonderful forum software turned that post to hash, in several different ways. ![]()
It might be better to send them to a spot closer to the info...
Also, advising people to change their known folder ID values directly in the registry should probably be couched with some warning language that doing so may will break linkages that they have established (e.g., if one has relocated their My Pictures folder to somewhere non-standard, just changing the registry value is going to break things).
Generally speaking, Windows and its apps still like best to be installed and run 100% from drive C: without any special relocations (such as those that are done by folks with too-small SSD drives, for example).

I'm still having this issue and I don't understand what the previous 2 posts have to do with my particular problem, since I am not trying to install an application nor am I having issues with My PIctures or My Documents.
Any other solutions out there? I'm sure someone else must have run up against this before.
