Hello: My Level: Newbie OS: Windows 7 64bit Photoshop CS6
I'm at it again. An other tutorial with missing info etc.
Actually, I think it may be a Ps issue.
This is what I'm doing...
Create a shape with the Rounded Rectangle > I apply a Gradient & Bevel
New Layer > Fill with White > Ctrl + Alt + G (clipping mask) > change Layer Blend to Multiply > Opactity to 35% > Filter > Noise > Add Noise
New Layer > Ctrl + Alt + G > Ctrl + Click on the Rounded Rectangle Shape to create a Selection
From there I am suppose to add a Stroke by right clicking on the object but that doesn't work. The only menu that pops up is a list of my layers
So, rather I select the Rounded Rectangle layer and then click Effects and select Stroke and then set the values for the stroke
Next I am suppose to add a blur.
Blur > Gaussian Blur but the Stroke ends up filling the entire object. No, I didn't set the Blur to like 1,000 it's only set to 5.9
I tried this on an other computer and the same thing happens. I called Adobe but they were unable to help me even get as far as the Stroke
Any ideas why the entire object ends up filled?
This is driving me totally Insane.
Are you applying the blur to the shape layer?
When you try the gaussian blur filter do you get a message about the Shape layer needing to be rasterized before applying the filter?
It sounds like maybe your supposed to stroke the selection on the blank layer (Edit>Stroke>Inside) and then run the gaussian blur filter just on the stroke.
The menus that appear when right clicking can be different depending on what tool you have selected in the toolbox or where in the photoshop window you right click.
Could you give a link to the turtorial?
OMG!! R_Kelly ... I cannot even begin to thank you enough for responding to my post!! I could just HUG you!!
Okay so ...
I do think that is what is happening. I do think I am applying the blur to the shape layer.
Yes. When I try the gaussian blur it does say that the shape needs to be rasterized beforehand. Which I thought was odd/wrong.
Yes. I am suppose to stroke the selection on the blank layer as you described above.
Do you know what tool I should have selected in order to have the stroke appear in the menu when I right click? That did occur to me but the ones I tried didn't seem to make a difference.

I was able to do it just fine last night. However, when I moved to step number 2 in the tutorial I realized that the Noise I added had ... ummm ... spilled over onto the entire canvas and was no longer on just the intended shape.
When I did a live chat with Adobe today (for hours ~ of my life I'll never get back lol) the person that helped me told me to skip doing it the way the tut instructed and to just place the Stroke on the shape layer with the blending option.
Thus far that has been the only way I have been able to get the stroke to be visible. When I do the actions the way the tut says the stroke is not visible on the canvas but it does show as being applied in the layers thumbnail.
I right clicked inside the object itself on the canvas. Also, I cannot seem to get a Stroke by going to Edit > Stroke ... it's Always greyed out. ![]()

Sorry, I am all confused now. Hope I am not confusing you.
I have been trying to solve this issue since last night. Frankly I don't get it because I was able to accomplish the steps the first time I tried. Except I think I did have to go about the Stroke via Blending Options but like I said I am so confused now I am not certain.
What really gets my goat is that Adobe was not able to help me.
Any way, sorry to ramble. I feel like I need a Valium the size of a hockey puck every time I open Ps or Ai lol
Awaiting your much Appreciated response.
TY!! TY!!

You need any of the selection tools (e.g. Rectangular Marquee or Lasso) to be active and a pixel layer to be targeted for that right-click menu with "Stroke..." to appear. "Stroke..." is also available in the Edit menu, regardless of active tool, when there is a selection and targeted pixel layer.
Yes. When I try the gaussian blur it does say that the shape needs to be rasterized beforehand. Which I thought was odd/wrong.
The blurs, like all Ps filters, need pixels on which to operate. You could make a Smart Object of a shape then attach a blur filter to it, with the added advantage of the blur being nondestructive and adjustable.

Photoshop's Layer Style Stroke has room for improvement. One problem is that it produces poor results with hard brush-painted regions and absolutely terrible results with soft edges such as soft brush-painted or blurred regions.
conroy ... thank you for your reply
When I go to Edit > Stroke the Stroke is not available/it is greyed out. And I have made certain that there's a Selection by Ctrl + Click on the thumbnail of the Rounded Rectangle/iPad layer
Am I suppose to still have the blank layer selected/blue when I Ctrl + Click the iPad layer? Could that be why the Stroke is Never available? Hmm? I'm pretty sure I tried that too already but I'll give it an other go.
As of now the Only way I can get a Stroke is via the Blending option.
Do you know why, when I apply the Gaussian Blur, the entire shape is Filled with a color?
When I went through the steps on my other computer it Filled with Light Blue rather than Black. ?????
Okay, well going to give it an other go.
Thank you again!

Yes, you need a regular pixel Layer to be targeted for Edit > Stroke to be available.

You have put a Layer Style Stroke on the layer, and like I said earlier, LSS gives terrible results with blurred regions.
When I went through the steps on my other computer it Filled with Light Blue rather than Black. ?????
I guess you had blue specified for the LSS colour on one computer and black on the other computer.
Okay, well going to give it an other go.
Thank you again!
Good luck, and you're welcome!
I'm baaaaaaa'ck ![]()
Okay, so finally I was able to get the Stroke to be available under Edit
However, when I apply the Stroke and make certain that it is Inside so that it ought to show up...
it is visible Only on the thumbnail but Not the artwork/canvas itself. ??
??
Any ideas are Much Appreciated
Ding! Ding! Ding!!!
ladies and gents ... we have a WINNER!!!
It turns out that the tut forgets to mention ... actually, someone with much more experience than myself probably would have known ... that the FILL MUST BE ON...

when creating the Shape (layer) the Selection Tool in the Tools Panel MUST be selected BEFORE you can Right + Click on the canvas/shape to get the Stroke to be available.
I am so embarassed. Such a Simple solution to something that's driven me Crazy for ... what ?? 2 - 3 days now?!
Now, I am about to see if the Gaussian Blur will work and if I'll be able to erase JUST the top & right Stroke without the Shape being partially erased as well. Fingers crossed.
THANK YOU conroy and kelly!! I Really Really Appreciate your patience and assitance ... always ![]()
PS. The nice man at Adobe couldn't figure out what was wrong either. I called twice and two different employees didn't catch it.
The last time I spoke to them I was told to Right Click on the BG layer and to choose Flatten Image.
Sure the Stroke was visible after that point BUT I was unable to lower the Opacity of the Stroke Layer. So, maybe under other circumstances
flattening the image could be a solution.
