what are the optimum pixel dimensions/resolution for slideshowing images

    I would suggest keeping files small, say 1500 px by 1000 px

    The "optimum" is the same pixel dimensions as your monitor. The problem is, that changes from monitor to monitor. So, if you might be showing this slide show on multiple monitors, there is no "optimum".

     

    The resolution is 100% meaningless. Actually, it is 158% meaningless, so don't worry about it.

    I'm beginning to think that "resolution" is closer to 162% meaningless!

    For me this is about what is optimum for the PSE slideshow editor as in my experience it tends to choke on large resolution images. Web designers are certainly moving towards doubling conventional ppi to 144 in the light of new retina displays. For example In Design Magazine produce their PDF version for the ipad3 at 150ppi. This is considered about optimum for devices which permit pinch and zoom without greatly compromising page loading speeds. I think it probably benefits type on the page although younger people seem to notice a difference even with images, compared with those who need reading glasses when working at close range. It’s an interesting development.

    Web design is a different animal than viewing photos or slideshows. In web design, ppi is important. In a photo viewing application on a traditional computer screen, ppi is meaningless.

    Maybe you should rephrase to non-Apple applications not optimized for retina.

    How is PPI important in Web design?

     

    If the Web designer uses pixel measurements (or browser window percentages), then it doesn't matter whether the page is viewed on a "Retina" display or a "Sphincter" display -- an image that's 500px wide will show all 500px, no more, no less.
