Your computer has plenty of power... subject to Win7 tuning... see links at end
To find out what you are editing...
Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
What is a CODEC... a Primer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811
What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
.
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... a screen
shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

.
For PC http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en or http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
For Mac http://mediainspector.massanti.com/

bars.html
.
If you have a red line over the timeline after importing a video and before adding any
effects... your project is wrong for your video... read above about codecs
.
Once you know exactly what it is you are editing, report back with that information...
and your project setting, and if there is a red line above the video in the timeline,
which indicates a mismatch between video and project
And, some other general problem checks...
As well as the below, right click the Encore icon and select Run as Administrator,
which is NOT the same thing as running the computer with the Administrator account, and
which fixes several "odd" problems... To create a two layer DVD (or a BluRay?), you
MUST have Encore set to use the Run as Administrator option

dont forget... cs3 is a 32 bit program...so it wont see all the ram you have on your 64 bit OS and board...only about 4 gig ...
secondly... read this
read about source and match this to your project setting
( ie: not square pixels )
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=681824
=======
sooo, if your project setting matches source footage you have best chance to deal with it and export it OK...
lastly... it's hard for most 32 bit OS and programs ( cs3) to deal with HD footage..as it taxes the resources a lot...see John's post and all that info about codecs and resources etc...
I use cs3 myself and am now shooting mov h264..at 720p ... I can't handle that on my PC with 4 gig ram.. so I convert it to cineform neoscene format ( AVI with cineform codec )... and that works OK for me...
hope this helps
