Question printing thumbnails in PSE7

Jul 25, 2012 6:33 AM

I am using PSE7 and when I print the thumbnail pictures I would like to include the time the pictures were taken.  The details show the date, time and jpg number, but only prints the date and jpg number.

I think pse only provides for date, file name and caption in the print dialog.

You could make a screen capture like this:

    thumbs-time.png

On windows use the snip tool in accessories.

    On Mac press Cmd+Shift+3

    Then crop

You can also use the print screen button above the numeric keypad with the Organizer screen open.

Then open the Editor and use File >>New ..Image from Clipboard

You will have added your entire screen to the clipboard; so simply launch the editor.

When I press the home/print screen key the first picture in the organizer is selected and when I launch the editor only the first picture in my organizer is in the clipboard.

Did you : "Then open the Editor and use File >>New ..Image from Clipboard" as indicated by 99jon in post 7 ?

    1. Open the Editor, then launch Organizer

    2. Press the three dots to hide the right hand pane

    3. Press Print Screen to capture everything in view

    4. Switch to Editor

    5. Click File à New à Image From Clipboard

    6. Crop your image around your thumbnails and save

Sorry, on my keyboard it’s not the Home key. I have three keys (top right) PrintScreen, Scroll lock and pause/break

If you have Vista or Windows 7 the snipping tool may be easier.

Sorry I don’t know but I’m sure there must be an exif tool that can read the metadata.

Do a search for the free FastStone Photo Resizer. It can add such exif text and much more.

    The free XnView image viewer:

    http://www.xnview.com/en/xnview.html

allows you to print a contact sheet and add your choice of information to include in the captions, including the data and time.

    Hi Tracy,

    1. Open XnView in its "Browser" mode.
    2. Navigate to your image directory and select the photos you want to print, and click the "Print" button.
    3. In the Print dialog window, on the "Layout" tab, choose "Thumbnails" as the layout type.
    4. On the "Caption" tab, check the "Show Information" box.
    5. In the entry field below, hit the "Insert" button, and select EXIF Image...Date Taken.

    print caption.png

In my example, I put in three pieces of info on their own lines.  When you choose that "Date Taken", the format will be

    [Y-m-d_H-M-S]

which includes the date and time on one line.  I changed the format as you can see in the screen capture to separate the date and time so they are on their own lines.

    Hi Tracy,

Yep, you don't want to insert the "Creation Date", you want to use the "EXIF Image...Date Taken" information.

Here's how I manually formatted the inserted information:

    contact sheet info.png

    to get this result:

    contact sheet.png

    Tracy,

If you want to get fancy, you can format the information like this:

    <Filename>

    Date: <Date Taken [Y-m-d]>

    Time: <Date Taken [H]>hrs <Date Taken [M]>min <Date Taken [S]>sec

    to get this result:

    contact shee 02t.png

    Tracy,

I looked at your contact sheet setup again, and you're using the correct EXIF Image information.  If the date/time is not what it should be, the problem is in the EXIF information stored in your image.  You might have set the importing options to change the date of the image to match the date of the import.

    Hi Tracy,

I can't help you on the quality issue -- you'll just have to experiment with the various options, most likely the "Rows" and "Columns" on your Contact Sheet dialog window.  I'm using the default 4x4 setup.  See the previous screenshots.
