Text Editor

Is there a text editor window in Illustrator similar to Freehand? I want to be able to edit text  without constantly having to zoom in so that I can see the text, then zoom out again to see the whole page.

In Freehand, sorry for the reference, you could select a Preference that would open a Text Editor window that was consistant in size no matter what the zoom level was. You could opt to show the text in 12pt Helvetica or in the actual font and size. This was an enormous help in organizing and shaping the size of the text.

Please know that I am doing this to make annotate a drawing.

Depending what you are doing, there is no text editor like that. InDesign has that though, except I cna't remember what Freehand had or didn't have at this point. However, why don't you make a paragraph style for your text. Illustrator can make paragraph and character styles, so make your style, and just apply it to the text you want.

so then the best I can do, is say stayed zoomed in a bit and just utilize your Navigator window (Window menu>Navigator) to tell where you are on the page(or move around, zoomed in), and use your spacebar(handtool) to move around the page.

As Dee wrote there is no Text editor but you can do somehing akin to what you wish to do.

Best done withthe Apllication Frame active so you can tab back and forth more easily then refocusing on different document windows.

    1. Go to Windows>New View

    2. Zoom in or out depending on the size of the original text to a desired magnification

    3. Now toggle back and forth from the working window and the other windows you can have more than two windows of the same document opened at the same time.

Your edits in any of the windows will be updated live in realtime on all of the windows of that document.

Hi Wade. Making a New View, will make it go back to that same spot. He/she would have to make a new view all the time if it is a large document, and this a lot of Views, which isn't the worst solution, but takes extra clicks. While, the Navigator window lets you stay zoomed in, but lets you see where you are within the document, and allows you to move the red square around to a new location without zooming back out.

how bad do you need this feature? I think it could be scripted...but probably no font preview.

The ideaa of a story editor is that it is not formated text it is just straight text so a preference for a specific font is fine as default of the default font of the system or application works if ou can script it without a great deal of trouble then it might be easy enough to make it a feature.

I know it was easy to accomplish for ID.

But with the different windows yoiu can also use the navigator without disturbing the origanl document view, So unless you had a million of different size fonts it probably works pretty smoothly.

ok, I can't promise you it'll be quick, but I'll try to script it. I never used FH, and have no idea how the editor works, but at its simplest, I was thinking about something like this.

    textEditor.gif

you'll select your textFrame, click on "Get", edit it, then click on "Set". How's that?

Hi Wade, it seems doable, will know for sure once I start coding (the scripting DOM is very limited and some things just don't work). The Programmers at adobe should be able to do while having breakfast.
