Is it possible to use an object as a selection path?

I know in photoshop you can make shapes with the pen tool and then covert them into a selection path.
I was wondering if there is such similar feature in Illustrator

 

For example with the picture I posted here, what I want to do is be able to select the objects that are in contact with the black object on top without having to individually select them or use the "lasso" tool

 

It would make things easier with a "Select all objects under or above" option, theres only the "Select next object under or above"

    There could be some work around I do no know of but the answer to your question is no, there is no such feature in AI

    Thanks but even with that it would be hard, lets say I want to select one diagnal road? I'd have to have a steady hand, and it'll be even harder If I had more and smaller squares

    Illie hasn't got a polygonal lasso tool like Photoshop. Dunno why. Wish she did.

    what do you mean? don't relay on your hands, use the line tool or the pen, draw a straight line, run the script.

    no no, I don't want to draw a line, I want to select the objects in a line

     

    Like lets say I wanted to select a row of squares diagnolly, If I had a selection tool like the pen BAM! easy

    The lasso tool you have to be steady and make sure you don't get a square you didn't want

    the script works exactly the way you originally asked, you draw a path, with the pen if you want, then run the script and everything under this path of yours will get selected.

    Carlos, it only allows one object at a time, not multiple objects
