Combining objects that don't overlap

How do I combine objects that aren't touching or overlapping? Pathfinder just turns them into a group, but I need them as a single object.

Select the entities and create a compound path.

This helped me, but when you answer questions, Mylenium, it would be more helpful if you could give us instructions:

Object Menu->Compound Path->Make

It's that easy.
