Hello:                                                                                      Level: Newbie      OS: Windows 7 64 bit       PS CS6

What are some reasons I would be unable to use the Paint Brush tool to pain on a layer?

When I try to paint it says the layer needs to be rasterized first. But even when I click ok and start to paint it's not painting black which is the color I set the brush to paint. It's more like it's erasing but not quite.

The layer doesn't have a mask or anything.

Sounds like you have a fill layer (or text layer or shape layer) that you're trying to paint on.  It needs to be a pixel layer.  You could rasterize it or you could create a new layer to paint on.

Considering your "message," I think that Noel has narrowed down the exact problem that you are facing - you are trying to Paint onto a Vector Layer.

Something else, that can affect the ability to Paint (or employee many other functions) is if you have a Selection (perhaps one that is Hidden), and are trying to Paint outside of that Selection. There, however, you will not get the message, that you mention. Just something else to think about, when Painting is not working.

    Good luck,

Like Noel and Bill said, it sounds like you are trying to paint on a vector layer. If you still cannot figure out the problem after reading their posts, please post a screenshot containing your layer panel. Thanks

    Kar209,

did rasterizing the layer solve your problem?
