Help with sub-menus

I need to add four more pages to my website already setup and running.  I want to add the additional pages under one of the pages already functioning.  Like a sub file or something on that particular page. 

Ex;

Page 1

Page 2

Page 3 —page 3a; page 3b; page 3c; page 3d

Page 4

Page 5

Page 6

 

I used DW CS5, two column, liquid with left sidebar, header and footer.  I would n’t like to mess with my left side navigation bar unless unavoidable.

I need the whole procedure from A to Z, since new to DW.

 

Any help given is very much appreciated.

    Have not uploaded it yet.  What I meant was that is already set to be uploaded but, don't want to yet until the 4 new pages are placed.  Can I send you the codes? Thank you for aswering so rapidly!!

    The easiest way is to replace the existing menu with a Spry Verical MenuBar.

    Thank you Altruistic Gramps. I guess I'll have to start over again. Now, where it says (the tutorial) 2.Select the location in your document where you want the menu bar to appear. How do I do that? Cause I tried but it keeps saying tha a spry can not be added to within a list. Should I erase the present navigation bar, the one that was alredy there with the new document layout 2 columns, liquid, left side bar, header and footer.??

    Go to design view

    _Capture.jpg

    and click on Link one. Then click on <ul.nav> at the bottom of the window and click delete.

     

    Leave the cursor where it is on the page, just in front of the text in the side bar and click the Spry bar as in

    Then click on the SpryMenuBar icon which will pop-up a dialog. In the dialog click the Vertical radio button and click OK.

    Gramps, you are awesome!!!! Can you please, explain me the order in which I should do the change from the default side navigation bar to the spry one?  As I said before, the pages all already made. Thanks again!!

    In which page should I do the changes, like substituting the items names with the ones to be used, the sub-menu titles, etc., or should all the pages be formatted individually? I Ask, because I did as with the original side navigation bar (without sub-menus) in DW, but the one with the sub-menus is not working properly.

    Are you using Dreamweaver Templates (.dwt) to generate your site pages?  If yes, you would put your Spry menu inside the main template.dwt & Save.  DW will ask you if you want to populate changes to child pages.  Hit yes. 

     

    If you're not using Templates.  You could use a Server-Side Include file for your menu.  Add an include statement to each html page where you wish the menu to appear.   The server automatically parses the menu into all your site pages.

Ms. Nancy, thank you for your help. No, i'm not using template (I guess I should, but didn't knew at the time), but can you explain further what is "Server-side", please? Thank you!!

    Since I already finished each page, and when almost finished, I realized that some more pages were needed, but included as part of another page, as sub-pages. I ask; can I insert the spry menu bar in each page and the necessary linking?

    You could copy and paste your new menu, scripts and CSS into all 14 pages.  Or, in the same amount of time, you could insert Server-Side Includes into all your pages.

     

    With Server-side includes, you will be able to edit your menu later by opening just 1 file instead of 14.

    As your site grows, this becomes a huge time saver.

    Ms. Nancy, I really appreciate your help.  I’m a History professor trying to build a history web site from scratch wit almost no knowledge of DW CS5. After having finished 10 pages, I realized that some of the core information was left out.  That is, the History page —Pre-history; Ancient History; Medieval History (for now, cause I know that some more pages were needed). Was about to upload it (Go Daddy) when I realized the problem with inserting sub-menus in the History page. It has been a gruesome experience with trial and error, but in the same way, a nice and challenging way of learning about this whole new world for me. With people like you and other like Gramps, I have accomplished a lot.  Receive my deepest appreciation in helping me out.

    Ms. Nancy, some question about the “include” 1. Should I replace the normal navigation with the spry one and format it the way I want it before doing the Server Site Include? 2. In step 1, it says to open a page that contains the Spry Menu Bar; Should I start with the index.html page? 3. Steps 2; how do I recognize the menu code? 4. Step 4, create a New File and save it in your “includes” folder.  Can you please explain some more about this procedure?  What name should this new file have, and in what step was the folder “includes” was created??  I got lost here.

    Go to File > New > Blank HTML page > Layout [none].

    File > SaveAs > SpryTest.html

     

    Insert > Spry > Spry Menu bar...

     

    Now you can see Spry code.

    Ms. Nancy, thank you, I'm begining to see the "light"!! But, still some way to the end of the tunnel. Some questions: 1.     I recommend you build Spry Menu on a plain, blank page first. 

    Customize the CSS. Save & Preview in all browsers.  When you get it running, post a link to your menu page.  Then we can assist you with creating the Server-Side Include to replace your current Menus.

    Ms. Nancy, I don’t seem to get a grip on the server side Include (rocket science for a History professor), so I was thinking about some alternatives to my two left hands here. Would it be better to make a template, add the spry menu, customize it and then add the Server Side Include? Thank you!!

    If you use a Dreamweaver Template (.dwt) file to spawn your site pages, you don't need server-side includes.  The Template populates common headers, footers & menus to child pages for you.

    No problem.  File > New page from Template...  SaveAs Page15.html

     

    Read the F1 Help section on DW Templates before you begin.

    Ms. Nancy; Ok, I made the template with the vertical spry menu bar, modified the colors but did not change at all. Now, I had my pages already made, how do I apply the new vertical spry menu bar to these pages already made?

    The Template has editable regions for things that will change on each page and non-editable regions for things that are common to all site pages.   Your Spry Menu must go inside a non-editable region. Save Template and close.

     

    1. Spawn a child page: File > New > page from Template. 
    2. SaveAs new_page.html
    3. Copy & Paste content from old_page.html into new_page.html
    4. Save new_page.html as old_page.html
    5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 for all site pages...

    Ms. Nancy; When trying to save a just made template, I got this message: “Encountered a sharing violation while accessing H:\websiteone\Templates\template.dwt” DWCS5 doesn’t lets me save the template
