timeline/work question for the pros

Hey folks,

Looking to assess how long a project would take. I'm a mediocre coder at best so I'm wondering for a skilled flash coder, how long would a menu take to build. All artwork would be provided for the project, but simply linking existing buttons to specific pages and having a launch button on each to fetch a url. What do you think something like this would take (ballpark wise)?

    A basic menu with just buttons and links should not take more than an hour if all the artwork is provided as well as accurate requirements definition up front.  Considering a usual lack of the well-defined requirements and back and forth I would go two hours for an estimate.

     

    Any estimate needs to be predicated on your understanding of the scope and the client's understanding that a change in that scope means a change in the effort/time/cost.  So if the client was answer back to say the number of buttons is quite large but they still won't say how many, I would just say that I charge by the hour.

    thank you for the reply Ned. As a charity we have to gauge these things and I've designed and created the artwork for a menu. Essentially laying it out exactly as I need. I've done menus in the past but am tied up with another aspect of the project. Just wondering what you'd charge by the hour, pm me. We're still collecting info on this project...
