I get the following message as soon as I boot up my PC:

"Adobe Flash Player Update Service 11.3 r300 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Anyone else experiencing the same problem?

According to Adobe, this is the first time they've heard of this issue.

I get the message 20 times a day no matter what I'm doing.  I have uninstalled and re-installed a couple times and still same message.

Bigger than a pain in the foofoo!    I play games in Wild Tangent and it kicks me out when it's costing me to play the game.  Also kicks me out of the free casino games in Facebook, too.

I use IE8.  Really ticks me that Abode wants to now bundle and shove Chrome at ya even when you don't want to use it.

I have Windows XP.......SP3, too.

I've also seen this error daily for the past week or so.  A Flash Player update installed normally yesterday so I thought this error would not recur.

Does Adobe monitor these formums so they will know it's not an isolated issue?

I'm an IT technician at a small company and I've had at least 5 computers get this same error here. I've also been uninstalling and reinstalling Flash Player. I think it's been working so far, but I may not have rebooted. I can't recall right now if I've seen this error also on Windows 7 machines or only on our Windows XP SP3 machines. I'll post an update if I see it come up on a Windows 7 machine as well, it's definately an issue in Windows XP SP3 though. The error comes up before any browser is started, we generally have IE8 and Firefox(current version) installed on all of our computers.

Same here.  We have 12 workstations in the office, 10 XP SP3 and 2 Win7.  So far 8 of the XP SP3 stations see this at intermittent times.  Some will get it once in a day, others will get it several times a day.  The Win7 boxes haven't seen it.

Chris Cambell seems to be working with it on these forums.

If you start reading of this problem on the internet, it appears a whole lot of us are having this issue.  Also with Firefox so I believe we can safely not blame this on IE.

I have had SP3 for ages and this is also not the problem.  This just started for me about 3 weeks ago.  I'm assuming after the last update of Adobe?  What bugs me the most is that it kicks me right out of whatever I'm doing.

You may be onto something here when you say only the XP machines are having this problem.  I did read a post Chris wrote yesterday regarding a "work-around", followed his directions and have not seen the dreaded message yet today but the day is still young.

If anyone missed Chris's work-around solution, he said to right click on Flash Player in the Control Room.  Open the program up and click on Advanced.  Once in Advanced, to "uncheck" automatic updates and click on the "Notify me of updates" instead.  But, since this problem seems to be a recent addition, I almost wonder if there's a bug somewhere or glinch or whatever sounds best to call it.

I've been getting thjis message apparently overnight for at least a month, maybe more.  I see it every morning when I return to my computer.  I'm running XP, SP3, all updates and Firefox 13.0.1.

I was having the same issue with one of my users.  The pop up would only show when she booted in the mornings.  It looks like the updater is corrupted.

I uninstalled the program.

I then went into my C >program files > Adobe.  Deleted the Flash folder.

After that, I went into my user account.  C > documents and settings > "username" > application data (this is a hidden folder) > Adobe.  Deleted the Flash folder also.

I then reinstalled the program and rebooted.

So far it is working fine.

I could not find Chris' post which you referred to.

What is "Control Room"? Is that a Mac thing?

On windows xp, control panel's add remove programs does not offer anything for flash player via right click. There is no visible access point in the windows programs menu for flash player.

Can someone please outline in clear steps how to fix this idiotic update service message?

Unique: Go to your Control Panel (before you do the add remove programs) and there should be an Adobe Flash option.  Mine was the very last option in the icons.

Right click on that and then turn off the updater.

Thanks, that gets me to the right spot.

Right now it is set to not check for updates. And as far as I know the user is still getting the service update errors. Is a reboot required for the setting change to take hold?

The full history of this pc is that I uninstalled flash player a few days ago, hoping that would get rid of the error message. It did not. I then reinstalled flash player, hoping that it would offer me the 'when to update' dialog. It did not. The errors have continued. The machine has not bee rebooted during this time. There is some chance that the end user recently set this setting to 'never check', and maybe the errors are not happening (I'll ask him).

Maybe they did turn it off.

Try my recommendation of completely removing Adobe.  (add/remove does not completely delete the files)

Yes, reboot also.

I was able to use the technique suggested by BJMB12 to get rid of flash on an xp machine, thank you. He said:

I uninstalled the program.

I then went into my C >program files > Adobe.  Deleted the Flash folder.

After that, I went into my user account.  C > documents and settings > "username" > application data (this is a hidden folder) > Adobe.  Deleted the Flash folder also.

Only diff is I did not reinstall flash.

However on a Windows 2003 box the same approach does not work. Uninstalled, deleted the hidden folder for all users, deleted the flash folder under c:\windows\system32, and it's still popping up those idiotic messages.

Does anyone know how to permanently kill flash player and it's automatic update system on Windows 2003?

Sorry.  Control Panel not Control Room.    I'm a Mod in a forum and the control room was a slip on my part.

I said nothing about going into Add/Remove Programs.  If you go into the Control Panel, there is an icon for Flash Player.  (Or on the list there)  Right click on that and then go to Advanced and uncheck automatical updates and check on the one to Notify for updates.

Yeah it was me jumping to conclusions about add/remove.

I'll post back here tomorrow after the machine has been rebooted to see how it when.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I just had my second error message today.  The message popping up doesn't seem to affect anything else; it's just a nuisance but still should be fixed ASAP.

I too have gotten this annoying little ditty around 10 times a day.  Mostly on a laptop that is in great shape that has XP SP 3 and runs like a pro.  I'm getting away from IE8 because they aren't updating stuff for it anymore.  To me, that's almost as annoying as the Adobe error.  Looks like Gates took a page from Job's playbook.  Shut off support and force them to buy a whole new system.  Want IE9 or 10?  Start taking advantage of html5 functions?  Win 7 OS in order to get those browsers.  I have too many advanced programs on this that would cost a bit to bring into the Win 7 world, and why fix it if it aint broke.  IE8 is acting worst by the day on things like FaceBook.  Went to Chrome.  A few Java script issues but all in all, a slick, streamline approach to browsing.  Safari and FireFox just are too much in the old IE world.

For me, it doesn't kick me out in Chrome, just stops my typing for a moment.

I started getting this message a few days ago after I allowed Adobe to 'update' my Flash Player to 11,3,300,265. That should not have been necessary since I was already using that same version and had been since it first appeared. Prior to that I had no problem using 11,3,300,265.

I use XP and mainly Opera but occasionally IE8. I can't say it has anything to do with which browser is in use. Perhaps it is triggered by page content?

I'll try System Restoring to the time when 11,3,300,265 appeared to work or maybe un/re installing Flash Player.

Hi, I would like some help with this issue.  I had to reinstall Adobe flash, but I am using Windows XP, for 2 days it kept crashing on me anytime I would open an app. Now I re installed it and I am still getting the issue in either Chrome or F.Fox. I went in Youtube that is ok, but if I open in Facebook it crashes on me. I would really like some help on this matter. Thank you in advance.

Isn't it about time for Adobe to chime in here?  It's their product and their problem.  Where are they?

Have you tried the walk-around solution to prevent getting the message?  That stopped it for me.

Control Panel

Right Click on Flash Player.....Open

Click on Advanced

UNCHECK auto updates and check instead to Notify when updates are available

@jbacinti.......Abode is working on this.

I was still getting the error even though I have never had 'auto update' ticked, so I'm not sure changing that particular setting will make any difference.

Since my last post I have removed the Internet Explorer version of Flash Player (11,3,300,265) and manually reinstalled it.

To date I have had no more 'Update Service' crashes.
