Audition CS6 and Windows 8

Jul 30, 2012 6:28 AM

I was wondering if anyone is experiencing the same problem as me, and if anyone has found a way to fix it.  I originally posted my question in this thread but it appears I'm having a different issue than the OP.

When I first got the CS6 Master Collection, I was running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1 on a standard 7200 rpm HDD.  All CS6 applications were installed and working properly.  A few days ago I bought a new SSD, installed it, and loaded the latest Windows 8 Release Preview (64-bit).

One of the first things I did was install a few CS6 applications.  All of them work except for Audition.  When I open Audition, I see the screen below.  This happens as soon as I launch the program -- I'm never able to fully open it before it crashes.

I submitted a bug report with Adobe but haven't heard anything back yet.  I also saved a crash dump file but I'm not sure where I can upload it so that the Adobe team can look at it.  Is anyone else having this issue?

Can you send an e-mail to audbugs@adobe.com and I'll setup a private FTP site where you can upload the crash dump.  Let me verify that this was a clean install of Windows 8 and not an upgrade to the new drive from your older Windows7 installation as well.

    Thanks!

on an interesting note. I am attempting to run Audition on a W530 running the RTM of windows 8. The Thinkpad W530 has nVidia Optimus graphics. If I just run adobe audition normally, it crashes. If I right click the audition shortcut, and tell it to run with the nVidia Quadro(High Performance) Option, it starts up fine.

Sort of, but mine wouldn't fully load the UI. If I may ask, what Graphics Card do You have? I finally got it to work on the Intel card on my W530 by Upgrading to the latest intel beta driver.

ahhh, looks like you don't have optimus, I could be wrong on that, but that would explain the lack of "Run with graphics processor" in the context menu. Try installing the drivers at this link

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-306.02- beta-driver.html

and see if that helps. if not, and it turns out you do have optimus(which you can check by going to device manager and opening the sub category "Display adapters", if you have 2 items, and one of them says "Intel" then you have optimus. in which case, post which intel card you have, so I can point you to those drivers, but either way, you end up installing the link above).

I hope that that is intelligible enough....

So... the Windows 8 upgrade is incredibly cheap financially speaking, but incredibly stressfull emotionally speaking?

Fullmetal, have you tried recording on Audition in Win8?  What kind of latency are you getting?

We've been looking into this since the initial report, and unfortunately haven't been able to reproduce it on any of our hardware yet.  We did get a crash dump from T3DV0L70L1N4 but now are looking at an issue where 64-bit Win8 writes 64-bit crash dumps for a 32-bit application which no debugger likes.  I need to get back in touch after I figure out how to get a 32-bit dump, which I should be able to do next week.

All the evidence so far, however, does point to a conflict between the graphics device driver and on of the Adobe UI libraries.  However Audition shares these with Premiere, After Effects, Encore, etc, so I'd have expected a similar issue with those apps.  Since Audition was the only one crashing, the problem may very well be something else.

In any case, I haven't forgotten about and am not ignoring this problem.  We'll get to the bottom of it.

Regarding getting a 32-bit crash dump:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tess/archive/2010/09/29/capturing-memory-dumps -for-32-bit-processes-on-an-x64-machine.aspx

I recommend ProcDump for getting a 32-bit crash dump on a 64-bit OS.  You can also use task manager that is buried in the WOW64 (or something similarly named) folder as that is the actual 32-bit version.

There's also some details on using ProcDump in this old FAQ post I put up:

I ended up going back to 7 because I had even more issues after I got audition working.

You have two graphics adapters because you have optimus. It seems we were having similar issues, because my audition also started working after the update, but it broke other things.

For me, the preview monitor in Premiere Pro didn't work, and photoshop had some graphical bugs.  Non adobe related, but I also switched because USB 3.0 doesn't work under windows 8 on my laptop yet.
