Echoing the advice in this help topic, InfiniteSkills trainer Andy Anderson has a helpful tutorial video on using the mixer brush tool in Photoshop CS6. First he shows its default effect on an image. He shows how it can be used non-destructively by putting its results in a new layer, and finally he goes through its options that mimic working with varying degrees of wet paint:
