Sorry, D800 isn't supported in LR3 as you've just found out: you need LR4 for full native support. Alternatively, you could use the stand-alone DNG convertor to convert the NEFs to DNG which would then be readable by LR3. But considering how cheap LR4 is when compared to a D800, I'd go for LR4. :-)

I just discovered the same "unsupported" problem with my Canon 5DIII.  Where can I find the stand alone DNG converter?

The question of "upgrade" to LR4 is not one of price.  The upgrade price seems very reasonable.  But I did many hours of evaluation on LR4.  While it offers clear improvements in some respects, for me there are also some setbacks in the Development process which more than offset them.  I've posted elsewhere on them, but I don't expect Adobe to act on them because other feedback has apparently been positive.  By removing support from LR3 Adobe may bully me to change to LR4, but I resent being forced away from a product I strongly like to one that I find weaker.

Thanks for overlooking my Google inferiority and helping anyway.

Adobe didn't "remove" support for your camera.  It was never added to Lightroom 3.  The camera was introduced after development on Lightroom 3 ended.  Once a new version of Lightroom is introduced, there is no more support or any additional development done to the previous version.  It has always been this way.

I didn't mean that Adobe had removed support for any cameras from any product.  I meant that they abandon the product, in this case LR3, by discontinuing any effort to keep it useful to those who prefer it to later versions while adding new camera etc.  As you say, this has always been their practice, unfortunately.  If I preferred LR4 to LR3 I probably wouldn't feel forced, but I do not, therefore I do.

If you prefer the Lightroom 3 develop sliders you can just revert to the 2010 Process and it will look and act like Lightroom 3.  In my opinion though, Process 2012 is so much better and easier than 2010 that I never use 2010 anymore.
