Well, of late, the answer to pretty much everything I'm asking about customizing LR has been "NO", but I'm hoping this one can be done...
Is there a way to set LR so the spacebar toggles between the single image loupe view and the thumbnail grid? This is how Bridge works, and having to hit the spacebar to get a single image, then hit the "g" to go back to thumbnails is a bother... Any way to do this customization?
Without starting yet another urination festival about LR performance and the difficulties of doing things that should be simple, I'll just say there are many parts of the initial processing of images that I find much faster and easier in Bridge than Lightroom. Having tried to do the same set of processing in LR4, I STILL find it far more cumbersome and slow - even WITHOUT the very significant performance issues. So, I use Bridge when it's most advantageous and LR for a catalog and editing afterward.
I wasn't aware that the Enter key would toggle through, so that's somewhat better than having to find shortcut keys on the keyboard, although not nearly as convenient as the ability to program keys to perform functions... For example, OTHER keys that would be nice:
A key to "expand all stacks"
A key to set the label "special"
and so on. I'm struck that virtually every video game I play provides the ability for me to assign keys to many functions. I wish tools like Lightroom were as flexible.
But, it is what it is. The 800 pound gorilla figures you should do things HIS way, not the way you'd like.
Yeah, I wasn't worried about you, Hal. I was concerned about the ravening hordes of p*ssed off users that have filled dozens of pages of topics on performance... Unfortunately, I'm as prone to whining and complaining as any of them, so I try to avoid screaming when possible... Although, this has been going on long enough that it's starting to seem like about time for the villagers to take up their axes and boiling tar and see how far up the Adobe food chain they can start barbequeing people...

There is no "special" label, and there is no "custom" label. All that means is that the "Label" metadata field is populated with a word that isn't in the current Label Set. What word would you have it put there for "Custom" when it means "any word except one of the five in the current set"?
I'm not concerned about what the color label is CALLED, I'd just like a way to set the one that defaults to "special", which is a medium purple... I can press 6 - 9 to set red, yellow, green, blue, which is fine, and I use those for specific purposes. But, it would be nice to be able to to set the other label without having to go into the Photo menu and open color label, and select "special"...
Not a big thing, just one of those "would be nice to be able to do" things...

So, you're talking about purple, not custom. You can click it in the tool bar - no menu access required.
