.edl opening error

hi

 

i've got a problem when importing an .edl file in speedgrade. (when i want to add it on the timeline)

    Make sure you're only using supported keys (edits, cross-dissolves) Premiere "Split" effect is not supported. You can use "Send To SpeedGrade" instead. It transcodes the PR timeline to a DPX sequence first.

    what do you mean by split ? i used for ex the razor tool, and faded manually with keyframes (opacity). do you mean that ?
    i can use the sent to speedgrade option, i just wanted to spare with the disc space.

    Can you open this EDL with a textedit and post edl-info from edit 8 ?

    I've got a similar problem:

     

    Hello,

    I've got a problem with an Edl and a few questions regarding working with Speedgrade:

     

    I'm working on the Grade for a movie trailer for a friend and wanted to use Speedgrade for the first time on an actual project. Because he used Premiere Pro to edit the Trailer he sent me all the files (including the PP project) so that I could generate all the files I need for myself. The actual movie files were all tiff sequences (actually there were just 2 tiff sequences but the cuts were all in PP-maybe they had exported the cut from AFX and made the cuts a second time in PP, but I'm not sure) so I wanted to use an EDL from Premiere and relink the tiffs to it. Because the media was on 2 video tracks in Premiere I had to export 2 EDLs*. I then jumped to Speedgrade to open the cut. The first EDL worked fine and I could open it without a problem but it didn't let me relink the tiff sequence in the reel section. I the tried the second EDL which has most of the cuts and I got the following error: Error_02.png

     

    I tried to first load the tiff seq into the timeline and then drag th EDL onto it but got the following error message

    What does it mean? I tried exporting with different settings but none of them worked for me. At the end I used the send to Speedgrade command to get it to work. It didn't bring in all the cuts but with a the scene analysis tool and bit of manual tweaking I got it to work. When working on a short project like this trailer it was ok to do it this way but I'm not sure how I would have done it on an actual movie.

     

    *Question: Is EDL really the best way because it just lets me choose one video track at a time, so for a project with lets say 6 video tracks I would have to export 6 EDLs? How is the workflow with more than one EDL? Do I have to open all the different EDLs and relink the media, then grade one EDL at a time, export all the different EDLs at the End and combine them back to one video file in PP or AFX?

     

     

    And now the addition question I have:

    • The trailer is 1920x1080 and I'm on a quiet powerful Z820 Workstation with a two monitor set up but I got a lot of spinning beach balls/freezing of the Speedgrade when playing back the Grade. It was really annoying because it slowed the work down quiet a bit. I looked into the preferences but couldn't find a lot of settings to tweak to get rid of the problem. I encreased the ram cache to around 75% and used the option to downsample the footage but the I had the same problems with the 960x540 verion of the footage. Is this normal with 1080p DPX footage? Are there any other settings I could change to make Speedgrade work a bit smoother? I had no addition software running except Acrobat so that I could look into the Manual.

    As Dennis mentioned I've opened the EDl in a texteditor. I hope that'S the one the right oe because as mentioned I tried a few different ones but none of them worked and I always got a similar/the same error

    Why don't consolidate all track in only one? What sense have a clip above other? If you need a transition then use a cross dissolve. Also is better don't grade titles and overlays.

    Yeah for short projects that might be an option. But I like to work on different tracks and if I have to consolidate all the media at the end into one track that could take quiet some time.

    As Manuel already suggested I would recommend to consolidate all to one video track. You will encounter less issues during re-linking your media in SpeedGrade.

     

    Thanks for posting the EDL. The first error message indicates a non supported edit. In this case at edit 1 (line 3 in EDL) starts a second video layer, which is obviously not working in SpeedGrade. Please make sure you're only exporting V1 from Premiere. You can double-check this by re-importing the EDL in Premiere.

     

    If you want to work with 2 EDL's in parallel in SpeedGrade (maybe makes sense for grading versions) you can open separate timelines and edit in side-by-side mode. To open 2 EDL: Load EDL1,relink. Add a new timeline and double-click on EDL2.

     

    Re-linking the TIF-sequence:

    First make sure you're using latest version 6.0.2. Then load from desktop or manually drag&drop tif-sequence to reels thumbnail (timeline-Reels). If it re-links but showing an error message ("Out of Range") change timebase to frame indices:

    Btw. you can easily copy the entire clip layer with drag&drop if you want to combine both timelines.

    EDL parsing error:

    Looks like this the same error as error 1. Make sure you're only exporting V1

     

    *Question: Is EDL really the best way because it just lets me choose one video track at a time, so for a project with lets say 6 video tracks I would have to export 6 EDLs? How is the workflow with more than one EDL? Do I have to open all the different EDLs and relink the media, then grade one EDL at a time, export all the different EDLs at the End and combine them back to one video file in PP or AFX?

    Both ways (Sent to SpeedGrade & EDL) only works with one vlayer. Can you please elaborate on what kind of workflow would you like to cover with multiple video layers ?

     

     

    And now the addition question I have:

    • The trailer is 1920x1080 and I'm on a quiet powerful Z820 Workstation with a two monitor set up but I got a lot of spinning beach balls/freezing of the Speedgrade when playing back the Grade. It was really annoying because it slowed the work down quiet a bit. I looked into the preferences but couldn't find a lot of settings to tweak to get rid of the problem. I encreased the ram cache to around 75% and used the option to downsample the footage but the I had the same problems with the 960x540 verion of the footage. Is this normal with 1080p DPX footage? Are there any other settings I could change to make Speedgrade work a bit smoother? I had no addition software running except Acrobat so that I could look into the Manual.

     

    Disk bandwidth could be the bottleneck. Make sure your disk is fast enough to read the DPX sequence. (~8MBxFPS at1920x1080). Also make sure you're using a recommended graphics:

    Ok maybe I have to get into the habbit of using just one video track when sending my cut to speedgrade.

     

    Another workflow I've used on narrative stories is to use separate sequences for all the scenes and then combine all those sequences into one final edit (sometimes I even break it down further). Would it be possible for the speedgrade team to develope an exchange workflow for this kind of work? Right now a solution I can think of is to export the EDL or use the send to Speedgrade option and then use the Scene Change Detection to get the cuts back but maybe you could come up with a more streamlined solution.

    I have a Quadro 4000 in my workstation as well as a Raid 0 consisting of 2 7200rpm 1TB disks. When opening the project on the next day it worked better but still not as fast as I had hoped. Do I have to restart Speedgrade after changing settings like disk cache?

    Cache settings should change instantly, no restart required. Which icon is flashing red during playback, display or disk icon ?
