Linking projects using URLs

I have a series of 8 projects that are each too big to be in one project (and linked together using 'Jump to slide #').

 

So I have published each one as an .exe file and created a unique URL for each of them. I can now use 'Open URL' to link each of these published projects.

 

However, this creates two problems for users:

 

1. Each .exe opens the 'Open File' dialog and requires that you click 'Run' and this takes a few seconds for each section which is not very seamless nor user-friendly.

 

2. Once the new .exe file opens, the previous .exe remains open. If you were to go through my entire module you would have 8 open .exe files to close at the end (they would all be blank since I have them currently set to 'No Action' however it would be much preferable to somehow make them close!!).

 

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix these two problems to make my module run smoother for my users?

 

One more question - my 'Main Menu' .exe has a list of each of these .exe's which links to each of them. As it is a singular slide (and has no purpose other than display the options and wait for the user to click one of the links) there is no reason for it to be timed. I would like it to remain static (so that the user does not feel rushed, or get timed out) but I don't know of any way to do this.

    Hi there

     

    Sorry, no way I'm aware of around the dialog you get other than to choose not to use EXE format. That's a browser thing and it's there to protect you. If you were able to just run an EXE, folks could do some pretty nasty things to you!

     

    As for closing the last EXE, you could try configuring the end option for the project to be "close project", then ensure the click that opened the next EXE also caused the project to continue playing. What should happen is that the new project would open, then the last project would hopefully just close in the background.

    Hi Rick,

     

    Thanks for taking the time to answer! You're right - the run .exe dialog is probably unavoidable.

     

    As for making the projects close once they time out - there is no option for 'Close Project' (I am using Captivate 4 if that makes a difference). I wish there was because that would solve my problem easily! Once you click to open the URL of the next .exe, the previous .exe does keep running but then does nothing once it is ended - there is just a blank screen that requires closing.

     

    Is there any way to configure 'Execute Advanced Action' to close the module? Or any of the other options? I have no clue how to do any advanced stuff. I just can't believe it is not an option, and that Captivate is not better equipped to create large modules that are linked together like this.

    LOL, I chuckle when folks boldly proclaim certain options simply are non-existent.

     

    If you click Edit > Preferences, then click the Project node on the left followed by the Start and End node at the bottom of the list, you should see an option near the bottom of the dialog labeled: Project end options. There should be a drop-down. And when you click the drop-down, are you saying that you don't have the option I do that is labeled: Close project?

     

    Give it a look and see what you find.

    Ahh you are a genuis! Thanks so much. Of course it is there as you said Where I was trying so hard before to find it was in the 'Slide Options', not 'Project Options.' That entirely solves that problem! Thanks Rick!

     

    The other problems are managable unless anyone else has any ideas
