portions of type disappear

Aug 1, 2012 10:21 AM

Hi Everyone.

I have just got done revising a business card that I have printed in the past. The Card was created in Photoshop Cs5. The strange issue is now when I attempt to make it into a pdf so I can combine it with the second side I am partially loosing some of the fills in the text. Here is a copy of the psdScreen shot 2012-08-01 at 10.50.13 AM.png

Here is what the pdf looks likeScreen shot 2012-08-01 at 10.55.12 AM.png notice the missing red in vinyl and in the k of tick.

This is what the settings are in the save as menuScreen shot 2012-08-01 at 11.08.29 AM.png. The other odd thing is it looks ok if you view the pdf in photoshop but if you view it in Acrobat x professional it starts to lose it's fills. Any one have any idea why this might be?

have you outlined your text prior to converting to pdf? ( this would be convert to outlines in illustrator, convert to shape in PSD). I know when my printer takes pdf, i have to outline all my type, it reads all my text exceptionally well.

The change that has eliminated issues on some files has to do with keeping layers when generting pdfs. So you might try unchecking the save layers in the Save As dialog box and then in the Save Adobe PDF dialog you showed uncheck Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities. This latter item will put layers back in the file and make the file larger than it needs to be for printing.

I do not know if this will fix your issue, but it is quick to try.

Really looks like an ol' fashioned bug to me.  There's no good reason you should see what you're seeing, given that the rest of the image is perfect.

I'd be curious to see what the PSD of this looks like, seeing how the red ends in a vertical line, as if a Shape layer had been moved to the side.

However, once you've flattened the image, then all other Save As options aren't going to do anything. Your pixels are baked in at that point.

As Brett N mentioned if you flatten the file then the export settings regarding layers are a non issue. Flattening the file also rasterizes all the content at the resolution of the photoshop document, which is not always desireable. If you retain the vector elements of the document in the pdf file they will be printed at the full resolution of the printer and only the pixel-based content will be at the photoshop file resolution.

I have also seen the older pdf versions print without problems when the newer ones will not. I have no idea why.

Doesn't the use of fancy Layer Styles pretty much guarantee that you're going to get rasterization anyway?  Or am I thinking about this too simplistically?

Yes layer styles, say for instance glows, drop shadows, ... will be rasterized.  But if you have vector shapes  that you want to remain crisp in printing then you would refrain from flattening the image.

Although the post has not benn active in a while I would like to see if there is a beter solution then converting my text to a shape.  I would preffer not to have duplicate files on my hard drive.  I wold prefer to keep my text editiable to make changes later.

This is my PSD file in Photoshop

This the file in Acrobat after creating a Photoshop PDF

Please advise if there is a fix or a possible other solution

And yes I would have prefered to do this in InDesign or Illustrator to get a better result but these files are sent to me from clients as psd already and I would prefer not to do extra work.
