I solved this, so I thought I would share the fix.
The freeze was caused by the ASIO buffer being too small,
and the driver was unable to deal with this condition, so it locked up hard.
The fix:
1. Update drivers to the most recent version, in this case it was a Presonus Audiobox USB.
The freeze during playback still happened, but after a few seconds the machine unfroze and continued playback. This pointed me to the next step.
2. Increase the ASIO buffer to 512 from 256.
I have been doing some serious editing for the last few days, and narry a glitch.
