Hi, for some reason I get the message 'preview unavailable for this file' for about 50% of the photos in the import module of LR4.1. This only seems to be an issue upon import since the files still import as usual and I do not encounter any further issues after the import with developing etc. It's not a huge problem for me but still quite anoying as I am not able to review my photos before actually importing them.
Here are some further details:
I am shooting with a Nikon D300s, all photos are in NEF-format, I use USB-mini USB connection between computer and camera. The problem occurs on both my Macbook Pro Retina 2012 and my iMac Mid-2010. The problem only occurs with LR4, I didn't have any problems with LR3.
Anyone out there with a solution?
I'd try using a card reader instead of the camera. I have a D300, use a card reader, and never see that problem.
Card readers are cheap, and if you trip over the cord, you don't pull a thousand dollar device to the floor.
Thanks Hal, I will try with a card reader.Although it is strange that this issue only occurs with LR4 and not with LR3.....

I started to have the same problem with my new Canon 7D, but not at first. The first imports worked fine, and I was using LR4.1. All of the sudden it started to show only some, or even none, of the previews.
The issue ia placed at whatever changed in the meanwhile (OS update, new sofware, difference sequance of actions, etc).
I read somewhere that people passed this problem by not using a secondary window/monitor. Not in my case.
I waited to the LR4.2 update to come out to see if it solved this... no, no such luck.
I started some testing and managed to overcome the issue:
Any format an resolution supported by the camera presents the same issue.
I usually start LR and only after that I connect the camera. If I connect the camera first and start the LR after, the previews shows correctly. I tried some variations, but this always works.
Dropbox has added a new (and anoying) feature that pops-up every time you connect an image device, offering to import your pictures into dropbox. This may be the culprit for the previews not showing (it interrupts the connect cycle). You can disable this feature in dropbox preferences, and with it disabled, the previews always show even if I connect the camera after starting LR.
Hope this helps
