I am getting error message ata when opening a 10 year old file

I have a customer that is asking for his art from 2002 that we have saved, but I can't open it in CS5 or CS6. I can see it in the preview window of CS5 but it almost opens and then gives an "ata" error and opens a blank document. Any idea how I can open this file?

    Can you do a screen capture of the error and post it here (using the camera icon from the header bar)?

    I don't know what version we would have been on at this point. Doc info below.

    One thing to try is to open in a text editing program. Do you get something that looks like this?

    You should read about the recovery feature in Illustrator a part of whoich is to open the file in a text edit app once opened it looks to me that the word Data does not belong there at all or should be on another line in a different string. But I think it does not belong so try deleting it.

     

    then you resave the file but not as text but as an .ai file then it might open in AI.

     

    when you have the exo-pression End it means exactly that as string so Data is destroying the expression. and a space might be also something you can try or look at the content following it to see if it belongs there.

    You can try to use the Find feature in the text editor to find the %%EndData line and take a screen shot of the last lines before that. I'm thinking that the preview got hosed. On a copy of the file, try changing the following

     

    Change the number of Hex Bytes in the line %%BeginData to 0

     

    Delete everything between that and the %%EndData line and save the file.

     

    Then try opening it.

     

    No guarantee but it's worth a shot.

    I also found another file from this timeframe that I can open once I click update and compared the text docs. The begining looked slightly different. But changing that on the copy did not solve the problem. I will try what you had mentioned about deleting after and before . . .Screen Shot 2012-08-02 at 3.28.08 PM.png

    I have noticed that there is a second %%Begin Data followed by a huge list of 00000000then %%End Data may this be the problem and how can I easily delete them because the list seams to go on forever.

    That's definitely the problem. Just keep highlighting the lines and delete.

    I assume up until I get something other than 000000. And then just save this file as text and I should be able to open in Illy?

    Also, once I delete the 000000 there is a paragraph of numbers and then another long string of 000000.

    You want to go all the way through the second %%EndData.

    You think that somehow a second set of data got entered. Delete the second set completely? I will try tomorrow at work. Thanks for your help so far.

    Yeah, somehow a second set of data got entered into the file. The part you are dealing with is actually binary data for the thumbnail for the file. If you have a dropbox and can send a link I'll try to look and see if I have any luck.
